Accu ASUS Ultrabook S56

Is it a tablet, a mini PC or the second coming of the UMPC (ultra mobile PC)? Whatever you call it, the Gole1 is a truly unique and fascinating device. The $99 computer runs both Windows 10 and Android 5.1 on its tiny, 5-inch touch screen while providing a wider array of ports than you'll find in most mobile devices three times its size. I got a chance to go hands-on with the Gole1 and was impressed with its extreme versatility. The 0.78-inch thick device has four, full-size USB ports, a full-size HDMI out, a microSD card slot for memory expansion and a microUSB port you can use to charge it (it also has a proprietary power port). There's a Gigabit Ethernet port and 802.11ac Wi-Fi to keep you connected at high speeds.

However, many people who have yet to get a tablet always find themselves a little lost on what they should go with, as both companies have great reputations and dedicated fan bases. Here, we’ll take a look at each device and give you the knowledge needed to make the best tablet decision for your current situation. For this review, we will be looking at the Kindle Fire HDX and the iPad Pro 9.7 inch. First, let’s take a look at both device specs.

Both the iPad and the Kindle carry large, crystal clear screens that do make viewing anything remarkably easy, but the Kindle seemed to have a slight edge in streaming capabilities when using Netflix as well as Amazon Prime Video which is incidentally not available for iPad. What was quite surprising is that when moving around my place of residence to test stream stability, the Kindle also proved superior, maintaining HD signal even in areas where the iPad momentarily lost connection.

This section is not so much a critique and comparison of the tablets as it is of their respective marketplaces, the Apple App Store and Kindle Store. In this contest, there is a very clear winner. While heavily curated and full of high quality apps, the limited android market that the is Kindle Store simply doesn’t provide the diverse functionality allowed to the iPad by the App Store. Outside of the aforementioned entertainment sections, the App Store has at least several times more downloadable programs than the Kindle Store. To tip the scales even more in favor of Apple, while both stores do often carry the same popular apps, some of them require "Kindle Edition” formats to function which has in the past caused delays in rolling out those apps pervasive that everyone is aware of. All things considered though, if you happen to be an individual who doesn’t care for the newest apps available the Kindle Store still does carry more apps than what the average consumer could use in a lifetime.

If we are to take the prices at face value, the Kindle HDX coming in at $100 less than the iPad (and with some searching, up to $175 if on sale) is the obvious choice. In truth, if one is to use the tablet they purchase as primarily an entertainment platform to use on long rides or airport layovers, it remains the best option of the two. However, if you plan to try to use your tablet for frequent communication, intensive apps, and even creation of content, then the iPad quickly begins to gain value. With a significantly more powerful CPU pairing, the iPad Pro can be paired with a compatible keyboard to essentially be the tablet that replaces your laptop for a great number of scenarios, making it ideal for business dealings alongside what are typically seen as normal tablet functions. Furthermore, with up to a quarter of a terabyte local storage available, when compared to the HDX’s 64 Gigabyte maximum, the iPad has the potential to carry just about any data you would need to have on hand, with or without a connection.

In conclusion, if this would be your first step into tablets and already have a decent laptop, the Kindle may be your best value. If however, you find yourself relying on a tablet more often than not and need that extra bit of performance, the slightly larger investment into an iPad Pro may be the best option. The Blade certainly doesn't lack ports and could support a modest gaming battle station. There are three USB 3.0 ports, an HDMI port and a USB Type-C port, which will allow gamers to hook the system up to Razer's new graphics amplifier, the Core, effectively transforming the lithe laptop into a formidable gaming desktop. However, the Razer lacks an SD card reader, which could turn off some people.Winner: Razer Blade. Despite the conspicuously missing SD card, the Blade offers more ports than its Apple counterpart. Even better, the Razer's USB Type-C port can support all manner of gadgets, including Razer's own graphics amplifier.

Apple's Retina display (2560 x 1600) has become synonymous with bright colors and sharp detail — at least until it's placed next to the Blade. Boasting a beautiful QHD+ (3200 x 1800) touch-screen panel, the Blade is a font of gorgeous color and elaborate detail.
When I watched the 4K "Tears of Steel" trailer, the reflective glare on one of the character's glasses was clear enough on the Blade that I could read a few words on the console he was watching. The neon green and magenta accents adorning various parts of the spaceship were much more vivid on the Blade than on the MacBook Pro.

When we tested the two machines' color reproduction capabilities, the Blade's panel was off the charts, hitting 120 percent of the sRGB color gamut and topping the MacBook Pro's 86 percent. The Blade's display also exhibited strong color accuracy, scoring 0.95 on the Delta-E test (0 is ideal), compared with the MacBook Pro's inaccurate 2.1. The Blade continued its winning ways during the brightness test, averaging a dazzling 338 nits, compared with the MacBook Pro's 303 nits.
However, the Blade's Chroma keyboard is simply a thing of beauty. The backlit keyboard not only supports 16.8 million colors, but it also can be augmented with one of six lighting effects. Thanks to the cloud-based Synapse software, gamers can record and map macros to any key on the keyboard as well as track their keystrokes to create a visual representation.

The Gole1's rectangular chassis is made from a very snazzy looking, gold-colored aluminum. In the bottom screen bezel, you'll find a power button, volume rocker and Windows button. The device weighs less than half a pound and feels solid, but more than light enough to carry in one hand or put in a front pocket.

The 5-inch display sports a 1280 x 720-pixel (720p) resolution that gives it a very strong pixel density of 293 ppi, far better than most laptops or tablets. While I usually prefer a Windows 10 desktop to have more real estate than 720p allows, you wouldn't want to make any of the icons or text on the screen even smaller. The 5-point capacitive touch panel seemed quite responsive during our brief hands-on.
On the inside, the Gole1 has an Intel Atom Cherrytrail Z8300 CPU, 2 or 4GB of RAM and 32 or 64GB of eMMC memory. The $99 model comes with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of eMMC storage, while the $129 unit doubles both the RAM and storage memory. We didn't get to benchmark the unit in front of us, but it seemed snappy.

The device's built-in battery delivers only around two hours on a charge. However, because it can get power via microUSB, you can attach the Gole1 to any external battery pack and juice it that way. During our hands-on, we had the system attached to an external battery and it worked flawlessly.
With all of its power and flexibility, the Gole1 could serve any number of different roles for you. It has enough peformance and the necessary HDMI port to make it a set-top box. Becuase it has 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Windows 10, it should also be able to receive Miracast transmissions, enabling you to mirror the display of a larger device onto your home theater via the Gole1. It can also enable Xbox Live streaming or Steam In-Home Streaming so you can play games from your console or more powerful PC on your TV.

The Gole1 can also serve as a regular desktop PC, attaching to a keyboard, mouse and monitor. It almost goes without saying that the Gole1 can be a tablet, due to its built-in touch screen. However, my favorite possible use case for the device involves using it as a mobile server. Just imagine installing the WAMP server software on it and anyone in the area can connect to your Gole1 and surf custom web apps you created. Or picture yourself using the device as a wireless file server to share assets like photos only with those in your immediate vicinity.

After running all of the benchmarks, I decided to look at the actual gaming side of things. Sure we can look at the raw stats, but they aren’t always an indication of how a product handles ‘out in the wild.’Since laptop CPUs and GPUs aren’t as powerful as their desktop counterparts, I decided to try out a slightly older game, Alan Wake. The environmental effects, fog, and use of lighting made Alan Wake an almost system killer when it was first released. Even today, some machines still struggle to play the game at its full potential. I set the resolution to 1080p, cranked up the graphics to full and entered Mr. Wake’s nightmare world. The device handled the game near flawlessly and didn’t even produce any screen tearing either. It was a bliss to play through.

Even with all of the gaming and backlit keys and aesthetics, a laptop is useless if it cannot do the job it’s good at: portable work. I used the device for several weeks as my primary work machine (which included Word, Excel, and Adobe Fireworks), took it to events, and took it around with me wherever I could.

Typing was bliss with the flat keys requiring minimal force to execute. It may not be everyone, but, for me, it made touch typing a lot easier than normal. The multi-touch touchpad lacks traditional separate left and right buttons and is instead one large pad. It took a bit of getting used to, but eventually became second nature.I also used it for quite a bit of Netflix viewing. The screen gave a crisp, clear image, which the speakers were excellent with the sound, albeit it a little soft.

During my time with it, I had only a single Blue Screen of Death while running Windows 10. This, in my books, is a win due to how often the OS BSOD’s on other devices. The device is equipped with an interchangeable four-cell, 48Wh lithium-ion battery. When taken off of power I was getting four to five hours out of it with a combination of gaming and light work, which is substantial for a laptop like this. When working alone, this number was closer to seven hours depending on the settings and applications used.

Even closing the lid and putting it into my bag I was able to use it the next day with only 40% of the battery being drained overnight.HP has packed in a one-year limited warranty and carry-in service for the Pavilion 15-ak001ni. A small gripe, but fetch-and-repair would have been a lot better for something of this price. How much does it cost and when is it in SA?Speaking of pricing, the device currently has a recommended retail price of R24 999 and should be available in August. The price is standard fare for a laptop in this specification range, though it may be out of reach for the average consumer. The iPad Air is one of Apple's most popular lines, with the company claiming over 200 million tablets sold in the Air's 9.7in form factor. Fans have been clamouring for a successor to the iPad Air 2 since its launch back in 2014.
