En 2011, la loi Lagarde a renforcé la protection des consommateurs souscrivant des crédits à la consommation. Cette loi a entraîné une plus grande complexité des procédures avec production de davantage de documents aussi bien d'engagements que d'informations. Franfinance (groupe Société Générale) a réagi à ses obligations nouvelles par la dématérialisation totale des procédures, une première en France. « De 8-10 pages dans le dossier de souscription, nous sommes passés, selon les cas, jusqu'à 30 voire 45 pages » indique Gérard Touati, DG de Franfinance. Or les crédits à la consommation concernent en général des montants de l'ordre de 400 à 600 euros et sont souscrits sur le lieu de vente où le vendeur l'associe au produit désiré par le consommateur.

Gagner du temps sur la souscription d'un crédit améliore la performance commerciale des vendeurs qui peuvent rencontrer davantage de clients. Ceux-ci sont, de plus, moins rebutés par la lenteur et la lourdeur de la procédure. Plaire à la fois au vendeur, prescripteur de crédit, et au consommateur permet d'accroître la part de marché de l'organisme de crédit. Franfinance a choisi d'opter pour la dématérialisation totale afin de relever ce défi. Au final, la transaction peut passer de 20 à 10 minutes. Le process traditionnel comprend l'usage d'un site web et d'un scanner. Le consommateur fournit ses documents justificatifs (justificatif de revenu, carte d'identité, justificatif de domicile, RIB...) qui sont scannés. Puis le vendeur-prescripteur remplit un dossier en ligne et, en cas d'acceptation du dossier selon un système de scoring, imprime la proposition de crédit qui doit ensuite être signée sur chaque page par le client. Le dossier est après coup envoyé par le vendeur à l'organisme de crédit pour qu'il soit payé par celui-ci tandis que le consommateur emporte le produit qu'il vient d'acquérir.

Si le client l'accepte et s'il dispose d'un téléphone mobile et/ou d'une adresse mail, il peut, dans les magasins partenaires de Franfinance, désormais dématérialiser toute la procédure. Les documents ne sont alors pas imprimés mais signés électroniquement grâce à un certificat fourni par Dictao qui garantit l'intégrité et l'horodatage des documents. La liasse de documents comporte une signature manuscrite du consommateur numérisée sur une petite palette graphique ajoutée au PC du vendeur (voir photographie). Le consommateur signe cependant un document papier d'une page pour donner son accord à dématérialiser la procédure. Il obtient également par SMS et/ou mail un identifiant et un mot de passe pour se connecter au coffre-fort électronique de Franfinance et pouvoir, comme l'oblige la loi, consulter à tout moment les documents relatifs à son crédit.

Le projet a été conduit sur six mois. « Il s'agissait de réagir au plus vite à la loi Lagarde pour prendre de vitesse nos concurrents et gagner en parts de marché grâce à une meilleure satisfaction des prescripteurs » justifie Gérard Touati. Le coût du projet comme son modèle d'amortissement sont conservés confidentiels. Rémi Vécina, directeur du programme de dématérialisation à la Société Générale, précise : « nous avons développé en méthode agile avec de multiples itérations entre les équipes techniques, commerciales, juridiques, etc. Le système d'information de Franfinance étant parfaitement urbanisé, il s'agissait juste d'ajouter une brique sans rien remettre en cause ». De plus, le système de Franfinance, bien que séparé pour des raisons légales des systèmes d'information des autres entités du groupe, bénéficie de la mutualisation de briques de la Société Générale. C'est par exemple le cas de la GED qui gère le workflow documentatire, bâtie sous EMC Documentum. Pour l'instant, afin de gagner du temps, le coffre-fort électronique est sous-traité à un SaaS. Mais la réinternalisation est prévue à très court terme sur les mêmes technologies que les autres coffres forts électroniques du groupe (mais sans fusion des éventuels différents comptes d'un client à la fois Franfinance et banque de détail, pour des raisons légales).

« Les équipes internes de Franfinance ont fait évoluer le site web de souscription, construit autour d'une application Java qui pilote le scanner et la palette graphique, celles du groupe Société Générale ont apporté la brique Gestion Electronique de Documents utilisée par le back office, et Logica a intégré l'outil avec la signature électronique Dictao » précise Rémi Vécina.Gérard Touati revendique un taux d'utilisation de cette nouvelle procédure de 90% dans les magasins partenaires où elle est disponible. Les 10% restants y renonceraient en général faute de disposer d'une adresse mail et/ou d'un téléphone portable. Suite à l'acquisition, cette année, de Green Hat, IBM affirme qu'il est désormais en mesure de fournir des tests complets pour application mobile aux entreprises qui développent leurs propres apps. Selon Big Blue, c'est la dernière pièce qui lui manquait pour transporter son expertise dans le domaine de l'application middleware vers celui du monde mobile. En clair, IBM veut aider les entreprises à gérer le cycle de vie complet de leurs app mobiles. « Nous sommes dans une position unique, du fait que nous prenons la totalité du projet de développement en considération», a déclaré Leigh Williamson, ingénieur d'IBM Rational, par ailleurs membre de la CTO Team en charge de la stratégie des applications mobiles chez IBM. « Alors que nos concurrents se concentrent sur un domaine unique, nous proposons de prendre les projets de développement dans leur totalité, et tout au long de leur cycle de vie. » IBM conseille à sa base utilisateurs d'opter pour les tests multiples lorsqu'ils créent des applications mobiles, y compris le test manuel des applications, avec des émulateurs et ceux avec des robots. Ces derniers consistent à réaliser des tests automatisés sur un « Cloud périphérique » sur lequel se connectent à un grand nombre d'appareils mobiles.

Plus généralement, selon l'ingénieur, l'objectif principal d'IBM est d'aider les entreprises à tester et à développer des applications afin qu'elles puissent tourner sur de multiples plateformes. En particulier, IBM veut les inciter à développer selon des standards Open Source qui leur permettront une large compatibilité avec les systèmes d'exploitation les plus répandus. En l'occurence, l'entreprise recommande aux entreprises de s'appuyer sur les normes JavaScript et HTML5, car elles garantissent que leurs applications fonctionneront sur des appareils différents.« En matière d'application mobile, des entreprises comme Apple, Google et Microsoft, ont une approche très verticale et elles restent très focalisées sur cette orientation » a déclaré Leigh Williamson. « Notre stratégie consiste à aider les entreprises clientes à construire une passerelle entre ces silos. »

Selon l'ingénieur, le fait qu'IBM se focalise davantage sur la mobilité reflète une forte tendance vers la mobilité sur le marché technologique dans son ensemble, comme en témoigne le succès des smartphones et des tablettes. « L'industrie informatique réalise que tout le monde pourra avoir accès aux données depuis un appareil mobile, que ce soit à partir d'un smartphone, d'une tablette ou d'un ordinateur portable », a t-il encore déclaré. « Si une entreprise ne dispose pas de son canal mobile, elle risque de perdre des clients très rapidement. Mais la question pour elles est de savoir comment ajouter de nouvelles fonctionnalités qui tirent parti de celles que l'on trouve sur les terminaux mobiles, par exemple les appareils photos ou le GPS. Mais aussi, comment le faire sans que cela leur coûte cher ? » Le cabinet d'études a montré que les ventes des processeurs pour PC ont progressé doucement en 2011. Intel conserve sa suprématie en la matière.

Selon IDC, les ventes de processeurs pour PC ont progressé de 3,6% en volume l'an dernier par rapport à 2010. En valeur, la croissance annuelle du marché a atteint 13,2% à 41 Md$. L'écart important entre les progressions des ventes en volume et en valeur tient à la forte hausse du prix moyen des puces proposé aux fabricants OEM. « Ils ont dû s'acquitter d'un tarif supérieur de 9% à celui dont ils bénéficiaient l'année précédente. 2011 est ainsi la seconde année consécutive de forte progression des prix sur le marché mondial des processeurs pour ordinateurs et serveurs X86 », explique Shane Rau, directeur de la recherche en charge des processeurs pour PC chez IDC.Par typologie, ce sont les ventes de puces pour serveurs X86 qui ont connu la plus forte croissance en volume (+9%). Les ventes de processeurs pour PC portables ont crû quant à elles de 3,9%, contre 2,7% pour ceux destinés aux PC de bureau.Sans surprise, Intel reste le leader incontesté du marché des processeurs pour PC dans le monde. En 2011, il s'est adjugé une part de marché globale de 80,1% en baisse de 0,6% sur un an. Celle d'AMD a connu une augmentation de 0,7% pour s'établir à 19,7%. Totalisant 0,2% des ventes de processeurs dans le monde, VIA reste quant à lui un acteur marginal. Depuis deux ans, on assiste à une déferlante du cloud computing qui veut, rappelons-le, qu'un client ne soit plus propriétaire de son infrastructure, mais locataire d'un service rendu par un fournisseur. Et le client paye ce qu'il consomme. De nombreuses études montrent aujourd'hui que la majorité des entreprises font du cloud en allant simplement sur les réseaux sociaux par exemple. Il est fort à parier que, dans un proche avenir, les entreprises iront bien plus loin dans leur stratégie Cloud en déportant des applications « business » et critiques. Pour cela, il y a bien sûr des conditions à remplir pour les fournisseurs de solutions cloud comme, par exemple, assurer l'interopérabilité entre les clouds, garantir la sécurité et la réversibilité des données ou encore identifier leur localisation.

Selene Chew, jeune étudiante singapourienne, est la lauréate du Grand Prix Netexplo, remis par le ministre de l'Industrie Eric Besson le jeudi 15 mars, pour son projet de canne blanche détectant les obstacles baptisée BlindSpot. Celle-ci est munie d'un téléphone portable, d'un capteur à ultra-sons et d'un navigateur tactile.BlindSpot détecte les obstacles en hauteur et prévient de la présence à proximité d'amis, signalée via un service de géolocalisation en ligne. Pliable et facilement rechargeable, la canne peut également faire office de téléphone mobile à la maison.Le Grand Prix Netexplo 2012 récompense chaque année un projet destiné à bouleverser de manière durable le quotidien du grand public dans les années à venir. Ces services progressent notamment avec le déploiement des smartphones et par l'amélioration des fonctionnalités des sites bancaires.

Internet n'est plus un frein pour les transactions bancaires en ligne. 19% des utilisateurs de services de banque en ligne ont déjà souscrit à au moins un produit bancaire sur la Toile, révèle une étude CCM Benchmark. Ils n'étaient que 13% en 2008. Les produits d'épargne sont les plus plébiscités (66%), devant les ouvertures de comptes courant (26%) et de produits d'assurance (24%).L'utilisation des smartphones qui donnent accès à Internet n'est pas étrangère à ce constat. « L'intensification des usages sur les espaces de home-banking s'explique désormais surtout par les usages mobiles qui cannibalisent les accès via l'ordinateur fixe et surtout augmentent la fréquence de connexion sur les espaces personnels », souligne l'étude. Ainsi, 27% des consommateurs disent utiliser plus souvent leur téléphone portable pour consulter leur compte bancaire. 18% géolocalisent plus fréquemment les agences bancaires via smartphone et 14% effectuent même plus souvent des virements avec leur mobile.

C'est aussi l'amélioration des services des banques en ligne qui a permis d'accroître le nombre d'utilisateurs, et de souscripteurs. Les établissements bancaires ont reçu une note moyenne de 8,3 sur 10 pour ce qui est de la gestion des comptes en ligne. Boursorama Banque fait office de meilleur élève avec 9 sur 10, mais cède sa place à ING Direct pour ce qui est du processus de souscription en ligne (8,8 sur 10).Cette étude s'appuie sur l'analyse de cinquante sites de banques et de sociétés de crédit ciblant une clientèle de particuliers, dont 27 sites en français et 13 ciblant d'autres marchés européens (Belgique, Espagne, Royaume-Uni...). Cette analyse s'accompagne des résultats d'une enquête en ligne menée auprès de 3 126 clients français portant sur l'évaluation de la qualité des sites Internet et des services mobiles de leur banque principale. Entre ses iPad et ses Macbook, Apple a vendu quelque 23,4 millions d'ordinateurs portables dans le monde au quatrième trimestre 2011. Si on considère l'iPad bien sûr comme un ordinateur portable ce qui n'est pas le cas de tous les cabinets d'études. Selon les chiffres provisoires publiés par NPD DisplaySearch, la marque à la pomme a vu ses ventes progresser de plus de 128% par rapport au 4e trimestre 2010.

La tablette numérique d'Apple, l'iPad, arrive largement en tête des ventes dans le monde, et donc des choix des consommateurs, avec 18,7 millions d'unités vendues au cours du quatrième trimestre 2011 - sur l'année, il s'en est écoulé 48,4 millions -, selon NPD DisplaySearch. A titre de comparaison, la deuxième meilleure performance est à mettre au crédit d'Amazon, avec sa gamme Kindle, et 5,3 millions de modèles cédés.Du côté des ordinateurs portables, HP domine les débats avec 8,7 millions de ventes, devant Dell (6,7) et Acer (6,6). Apple clôt le top 5 avec 4,6 millions d'unités vendues. Au total, 88 millions de PC portables et tablettes numériques ont trouvé preneur au quatrième trimestre 2011, marqué notamment par les achats de Noël. Orange Business Service (OBS) a présenté hier son offre de TelePresence délivrée en mode cloud. Afin de montrer la qualité de son service, Le groupe a réalisé une vidéoconférence en direct entre Paris, Londres, Pékin et Arnhem aux Pays-Bas.

Orange Business Service (OBS) a fait les choses en grand pour promouvoir son offre de TelePresence. Des journalistes de différents pays étaient donc présents dans des lieux de conférence à Paris, Londres et Pékin, afin de participer et d'interroger Vivek Badrinath, directeur exécutif d'OBS, ainsi que Pieter Schoehuijs, utilisateur du service et DSI du chimiste AkzoNobel. Ce dernier est présent dans 80 pays et emploie 55 000 personnes. L'une des particularités du service de Téléprésence est de pouvoir connecter des systèmes de diverses origines, tant côté matériel qu'opérateurs. Ainsi la connexion a été effectuée avec des équipements Cisco en Angleterre et du matériel Huawei en Chine.Vivek Badrinath a rapidement présenté les avantages de la Téléprésence, à savoir une réduction importante des coûts, une plus grande rapidité dans la prise de décisions, ainsi qu'un meilleur rendement écologique, par la suppression des déplacements professionnels. Selon lui, utiliser la Téléprésence est « simple comme un coup de fil ».

C'est dans ce sens qu'est intervenu Peter Schoehuijs, afin de partager son expérience sur le service d'Orange. Le DSI d'AkzoNobel se sert régulièrement du service afin d'interagir avec les managers des quatre-vingt pays dans lesquels on trouve son entreprise. La baisse des coûts est réelle, puisqu'il annonce avoir économisé 500 000 €. La solution évite également les problèmes de mauvaise compréhension, mais surtout « elle nous a permis de mettre fin aux difficultés d'organisation lorsqu'il s'agit de travailler avec les différents managers ».« Dès que nous l'avons testée, nous l'avons adoptée » ajoute Peter Schoehuijs. De plus, « cela oblige l'utilisateur du service à rester attentif » et cela donne l'impression de « se rapprocher d'une réunion autour d'une même table. Les réactions sont plus naturelles qu'auparavant, en conférence audio ou vidéo ».

Le service proposé par Orange est simple à utiliser: une réservation de réunion sur Internet, un lien pour se connecter et l'on interagit directement avec ses interlocuteurs, le tout en haute définition.Alors d'où vient la nouveauté associée au terme cloud ? OBS la définit comme étant la possibilité d'interconnecter différents systèmes et opérateurs télécoms au sein d'un même service, mais surtout, pour l'utilisateur, de n'avoir rien d'autre à acheter que des écrans pour suivre la conférence. Orange facture son service à l'usage. Ainsi, l'entreprise n'a pas à acheter de matériel, dont la location est facturée dans le service. Quant à la question du coût du service, OBS a botté en touche à plusieurs reprises répondant que « chaque entreprise a la possibilité de profiter de cette offre, suivant divers paramètres : nombre de salles de réunion utilisées, distance entre les unes et les autres, la fréquence d'utilisation ainsi que le matériel utilisé ».

OBS annonce une disponibilité du service entre 99,8% et 99,95% du temps, et investit près de 750 millions d'euros par an pour développer l'infrastructure. En cas de souci, un « concierge » est disponible 24 heures sur 24, 7 jours sur 7, afin de parer à tous problèmes.Dernière nouveauté, le service permet de participer aux réunions via une tablette, un smartphone ou un ordinateur portable. Dans ce cas, même si la qualité de la vidéo est à la baisse, s'adaptant à la résolution de la caméra, la latence demeure très faiblement perceptive - sans être gênante - dans la salle de conférence, via une connexion en WiFi.Les possibilités d'interopérabilité sont élargies, le service d'OBS étant compatible avec les opérateurs télécoms AT&T, BT, Tata et Telefonica, et depuis peu avec Verizon, en attendant prochainement T-Systems. A l'heure actuelle, soixante-sept pays peuvent accueillir cette offre de Telepresence, avec une offre de vidéoconférence dans cent-six pays. Microsoft a publié des résultats trimestriels supérieurs aux attentes des analystes, avec un chiffre d'affaires en hausse de 6% à 17,4 Md$ et un bénéfice net à plus de 5 Md$.

Au cours de son troisième trimestre fiscal, clôt le 31 mars, Microsoft a vu son chiffre d'affaires augmenter dans la plupart de ses divisions, à l'exception de son département divertissements et loisirs. Celui-ci s'est établi à 17,41 milliards de dollars, soit une hausse de 6% par rapport à la même période en 2011. Toutefois, le bénéfice net de l'éditeur, en légère baisse, s'est élevé à 5,11 milliards de dollars, et à 0,60 $ par action, contre 5,23 milliards de dollars, et 0,61 $ par action, un an plus tôt. Microsoft rappelle que, l'an dernier à même époque, les profits engrangés avaient été réalisés grâce à un avantage fiscal ponctuel de 461 millions de dollars, soit 0,05 $ par action, lié à accord fiscal avec le gouvernement des États-Unis. En excluant cet élément, le bénéfice par action du trimestre écoulé aurait augmenté de 7% par rapport à 2011. Néanmoins, les résultats de la firme de Redmond ont dépassé le consensus des analystes financiers interrogés par Thomson Reuters qui prévoyaient 0,58 $ de bénéfice par action et 17,18 milliards de dollars de revenus.Le PDG de Microsoft, Steve Ballmer, a qualifié ces résultats de « solides », dans un communiqué, et a rappelé que sa société se trouvait dans un important cycle de mise à jour, incluant les prochaines versions de solutions clés pour les entreprises et le grand public, comme Windows et Office.

«Nous avons relevé une forte consommation des entreprises sur nos produits Office et serveurs et une demande continue pour les solutions PC, qui ont contribué à ce que nous réalisions une croissance solide », », a déclaré Bill Koefoed, directeur général chargé des relations entre l'éditeur et les investisseurs, au cours d'une conférence téléphonique. «En plus de cette hausse de nos revenus, nous avons été en mesure de faire progresser nos marges en mettant l'accent sur la gestion des coûts », a t-il ajouté De nombreux experts de l'industrie voient les 12 à 18 prochains mois comme une période cruciale pour Microsoft, bousculé par la vague du cloud computing, une menace pour son business model historique, basé sur le « on-premise ». Des porte-parole de Microsoft ont indiqué à maintes reprises que la stratégie de la firme qui consistait à proposer des options hybrides pour le déploiement de logiciels dans le cloud et sur site était la bonne et qu'elle donnait les résultats attendus. Toutefois, le groupe est soumis à une forte pression de tous les côtés, et doit notamment faire face à la suite Google Apps, qui est en concurrence directe avec Exchange et Office. Microsoft se trouve également à la traîne sur le marché des tablettes et des smartphones, derrière l'iPhone et l'iPad d'Apple, ainsi que les terminaux mobiles sous Android. Ses préoccupations sont accentuées par la tendance « bring-your-own-device » (BYOD) qui conduit les utilisateurs à apporter au bureau leurs équipements sous iOS et sous Android.

Donc, l'essentiel repose sur le succès des futurs produits, comme la famille des systèmes d'exploitation de Windows 8 pour PC de bureau, portables, tablettes et, éventuellement, smartphones, de même qu'Office 15. Ensemble, Windows 8 et Office 15 sont conçus pour être conviviaux, comme en témoigne le développement de l'interface Metro, qui propose un affichage en mosaïque destiné aux écrans tactiles. Au cours de la conférence téléphonique, les responsables de Microsoft ont également souligné le niveau des ventes aux entreprises qu'ils considérent comme exceptionnelles.« Les entreprises continuent d'investir sur du long terme dans la plate-forme Microsoft », s'est félicité Bill Koefoed, ajoutant que grâce à cela, les ventes de licences multi-annuelles avaient atteint approximativement 40 % des revenus. Il a également souligné qu'au cours du trimestre, Microsoft avait enregistré une forte croissance d'accords d'entreprise autour de ses licences (Enterprise Agreement) que ce soient de nouveaux contrats ou des renouvellements. En Europe occidentale, le cloud ne fait pas encore partie des priorités du secteur public selon une récente enquête du cabinet IDC.

Netbooks are great starter computers for kids, because they are small and light, reasonably cheap, and have good battery life. Much of the netbook design thinking came from Intel's Classmate project, and Asus launched its first netbook into the UK education market in October 2007, as I reported at the time. Later, Intel's much more robust Classmate 2 added a touchscreen for pen operation, with the screen folded back over the keyboard. A UK example is ZooStorm's Fizzbook Spin netbook, with the latest version costing around £400.However, parents and schools tend to buy cheaper off-the-shelf netbooks. The Samsung NC-10 was hugely popular, and the Toshiba NB200 was an attractive alternative. The current equivalents include the Samsung NC-110 and Toshiba NB550D, but these are relatively expensive. You don't mention a budget, but the Asus 1008HA (£189.99) and Asus 1011PX (£199.99) are better value at Amazon.co.uk prices. You should also add £10-£12 for a 2GB memory upgrade.If you are willing to spend a bit more on a netbook, then look at the AMD-powered Lenovo IdeaPad S205 instead. For a netbook-type price of £274.99, you get a bigger 11.6in screen, faster graphics (Radeon HD 6310M) and the full Windows 7 Home Premium instead of Windows Starter.

The next step up from the S205 would be a Lenovo Z370 (£449) notebook with a 13.3in screen, Intel Core i3-2330M processor, 500GB hard drive and DVD-RW. It has RapidBoot so it starts Windows 7 in 20 seconds, and an SSD (Solid State Drive) is optional. Also, you can write and draw with it, and it provides a much better experience than trying to write on an Apple iPad screen.Whether Microsoft's Surface Pro is your best choice is another matter.

Surface Pro is a tablet, and its Touch and Type keyboards double as screen covers. The Asus Transformer, by contrast, is a laptop with a detachable screen, where the detached screen becomes the tablet. This gives manufacturers the chance to provide a better keyboard (basically the same as a laptop) and to include two batteries: one inside the tablet and one inside the keyboard/dock. The resulting hybrid is a bit bigger and heavier than a tablet, but you can get much more battery life. You also tend to get more ports.There are two basic classes of PC in this market, and they are roughly equivalent to Ultrabooks and netbooks. The Ultrabook-style devices have Intel Core iX processors, 4GB or more memory, and 64-bit Windows 8. Some models also have HD screen resolutions: perhaps 1920 x 1080 pixels instead of the common 1366 x 768. UK prices are relatively high, often over £1,000. The netbook-style devices have Intel Atom Z2760 and similar processors, 2GB or more memory, and 32-bit Windows 8. They provide much better battery life, and they're around half the price.The Atom-based models are, in my experience, surprisingly nippy, and they are quite capable of running Microsoft Office. They're a huge improvement on traditional netbooks.

However, if you need to run heftier Windows programs such as Adobe Photoshop and Creative Suite, edit videos or play PC games, then you should go for a machine with a Core i3 or faster processor.I haven't seen enough of the different Windows 8 hybrids for long enough to have any strong recommendations, and better models are on the way. However, the battery life is worse and it costs a bit more at £699.99. (The HP Envy x2 11-g000ea started at £1,099.)For a high-end machine, the Samsung ATIV Smart PC Pro Elite 700T is worth a look. It has an 11.6in screen and, like the Surface Pro, an Intel Core i5- 3317U processor, a Wacom digitising pen, and a 1920 x 1080 Full HD screen display. The inclusion of a 128GB SSD, instead of a 64GB drive, pushes the price up to £1,099.99.You should look at the Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13 as well. This is a 13.3in Ultrabook rather than a tablet, so you get a 1.9GHz Core i7-3517U with 4GB of memory, a 128GB SSD and a good keyboard for £999.99. Its party trick is that it has a double-joined hinge so you can fold the screen back to turn it into a tablet.Although the IdeaPad Yoga 13 is more of a work machine, the claimed battery life is good (8 hours), and it's not unduly heavy at 1.5kg.

La médaille a évidemment son revers : le « allways on ». Deux salariés sur trois estiment que le travail déborde sur leur temps de loisirs. Pour 45% des répondants sur leurs voyages personnels, 3 sur 4 sur le week-end, 2 sur 3 en vacances, 1 sur 3 au petit déjeuner, 41% devant la télé. L'enquête n'a pas franchi la porte de la chambre à coucher, il y aurait pourtant beaucoup à dire.Des outils de plus en plus d'origine personnelle. 51% des salariés interrogés vont dans ce sens. 20% d'entre eux utilisent régulièrement leurs outils personnels pour des activités professionnelles, 16% de manière occasionnelle, 15% rarement. Un total de 51%. 29% ne le font jamais, car ce n'est pas autorisé, 19% parce qu'ils s'y refusent.Inversement, les entreprises ont du mal à entrouvrir la porte. Dans 65% des réponses, l'utilisation d'un terminal personnel n'est pas autorisée par l'entreprise. Parfois c'est toléré. Dans des cas infimes, l'entreprise accepte mais ne rembourse rien (ni l'achat ni l'utilisation). Cas encore plus limités, ceux où l'entreprise encourage en prenant en charge tout ou partie des frais d'acquisition ou d'utilisation.

En devenant plus mature, le Byod devient aussi plus contradictoire. Les salariés poussent, car leurs usages personnels sont plus développés et leurs outils souvent plus performants. En même temps, ils craignent d'être encore plus envahis dans leur espace personnel. L'entreprise, elle, hésite à ouvrir ses applicatifs ou ses règlements. Pour des raisons également contradictoires. L'efficacité sera peut être au rendez-vous, mais par exemple, si le salarié utilise ses outils personnels dans le cadre de son travail, le fait-il toujours pour des activités professionnelles ou aussi pour d'autres qui n'ont rien à voir avec l'entreprise ? Et dans ce cas, est-ce le prix à payer pour accepter cette tendance dans l'entreprise ? Est-ce un combat d'arrière garde ou une avancée ? Qui finance, qui sécurise, qui répare, dans quelles tanches horaires ? Autant de questions sans réponse tranchée. Le constructeur Texan a annoncé l'acquisition de Wyse Technology, spécialiste du client léger. Cette opération vise à développer ses offres de virtualisation de poste de travail.

Dell continue ses emplettes dans son activité entreprise. Dernière acquisition en date, Wyse Technology, qui propose des clients légers, de la virtualisation du poste de travail, ainsi que des logiciels en mode cloud pour la gestion des PC portables et les terminaux mobiles (avec l'acquisition de Trellia en novembre 2011). Parmi les produits, on peut citer PocketCloud, une application qui fonctionne sur les smartphones et les tablettes pour disposer de son bureau de PC en situation de mobilité. Actuellement, Wyse dispose de 180 brevets et à livrer 20 millions de produits dans le monde. Dell n'a pas donné le montant de la transaction, mais s'attend à finaliser l'opération à la fin du deuxième trimestre fiscal 2013. Le constructeur estime que cette acquisition va lui permettre d'étoffer son offre de virtualisation du poste de travail et offrir de nouvelles solutions pour les entreprises. Pour se protéger du piratage ou pour les personnes electro-sensibles, des scientifiques grenoblois ont créé un papier peint capable de filtrer des ondes électromagnétiques.

Des chercheurs grenoblois ont présenté jeudi un papier peint décrit comme « révolutionnaire » qui permet de filtrer les ondes électromagnétiques d'un réseau local sans fil (WiFi) ou d'un téléphone portable, sans perturber les ondes de la radio ou des fréquences de secours. Développé par les chercheurs de l'institut polytechnique Grenoble INP et du Centre technique du papier (CTP), ce produit devrait être commercialisé début 2013 par le groupe finlandais Ahlstrom, qui en a acheté la licence exclusive.D'une apparence banale, le papier peint est recouvert de motifs tracés à l'encre conductrice (contenant des particules d'argent) qui permettent de « filtrer jusqu'à trois fréquences à la fois », a expliqué Pierre Lemaitre-Auger, enseignant-chercheur à Grenoble INP, au cours du forum 4i de Grenoble.

Le papier peint a été conçu par un doctorant de Grenoble INP, aidé de trois autres chercheurs. Son premier objectif est de permettre une meilleure protection des données d'un réseau informatique connecté en wifi. « Un réseau WiFi est muni de protections qui peuvent être craquées par des petits malins. Si vous mettez du papier peint sur les murs entourant un bureau ou un appartement, votre WiFi marche bien mais il ne peut plus être piraté », a souligné M. Lemaitre-Auger.Le papier peint peut aussi être utilisé par des personnes souhaitant se protéger des ondes électromagnétiques. « Beaucoup de gens sont intéressés par les problèmes d'électrosensibilité, par le fait que les ondes seraient dangereuses pour la santé », a noté le chercheur. Sans se prononcer sur le fond du débat, il a souligné que ce papier peint offrait « aux gens qui le souhaitent la possibilité de se prémunir et d'avoir un très faible niveau d'ondes dans leur appartement ». Il pourrait ainsi être utilisé dans des hôpitaux, des salles de spectacles ou pour protéger des chambres à coucher.Quant au prix de ce papier peint anti-wifi, il devrait être « raisonnable », c'est-à-dire « équivalent à celui d'un papier peint classique de moyenne gamme », selon M. Lemaître-Auger.

La technologie développée pourrait en outre aussi être utilisée sur des revêtements de sol, des plafonds ou des fenêtres, selon Guy Eymin Petot Tourtollet, du CTP. Le phénomène du Bring Your Own Device touche un nombre grandissant d'entreprises. Volvo IT, filiale informatique du groupe Volvo a mis en place une politique BYOD qui rencontre le succès.Avec un parc évalué à 25 000 terminaux mobiles - hors PC portables - dans le groupe Volvo, Volvo IT - la filiale informatique de la société - a décidé, pour les utilisateurs qui le souhaitent, de mettre en place une politique de BYOD (Bring Your Own Device). Les utilisateurs de de la firme peuvent donc, s'ils en ont envie, accéder aux principales applications de type bureautique de l'entreprise sur leur appareil mobile personnel. Le système fonctionne sous iOS, Android et Windows Phone.En matière de sécurité des données et de protection du réseau, Volvo IT a mis en place un système de connexion où lors de sa première connexion aux applications, l'utilisateur choisit un mot de passe. Celui-ci sert à protéger l'accès au contenu de l'appareil. En cas de perte ou de vol de l'appareil, la compagnie a la possibilité de supprimer à distance les données relatives aux applications de l'entreprise.

Pour l'instant, les terminaux ne peuvent pas accéder au WiFi de l'entreprise et doivent donc être équipés d'une connexion en 3G illimité. Mais un projet d'ouvrir un réseau WiFi dédié aux smartphones sur chaque site du groupe via un accès sécurisé est en cours.Les salariés doivent faire la demande pour accéder à ce service, et le bouche-à-oreille est très bon. Ce sont ainsi près de 12 000 terminaux mobiles qui sont inscrits à ce service, dont 8 000 appareils personnels depuis septembre 2011, date de lancement du service. L'engouement pour ce service s'est confirmé en décembre 2011 où Volvo IT a reçu près de 4 000 demandes en l'espace d'un mois. « Cela s'explique par la période de Noël propice aux cadeaux high-tech bien sûr mais cela montre aussi que le bouche-à-oreille fonctionne très bien et qu'il y a une vraie volonté de la part de nos collaborateurs de centraliser les usages personnels et professionnels de leur smartphone ou tablette » explique Laurent Geray, responsable Innovation chez Volvo IT France. La politique est donc de laisser le choix aux collaborateurs d'installer ou non les applications de l'entreprise sur leur terminal mobile personnel.

Des évolutions sont en cours de développement, pour répondre aux besoins des utilisateurs : remplir des notes de frais, consulter les plannings ou encore réserver un taxi depuis un terminal personnel sera donc bientôt possible pour les utilisateurs de Volvo IT.« Notre approche est très pragmatique. Nous avons commencé à laisser un accès aux applications qui nous paraissaient essentielles comme l'agenda ou les e-mails et de faire évoluer le service en fonction des attentes de nos collaborateurs. Chercher à gérer le phénomène de BYOD dans sa globalité dès le départ n'est pas une tactique efficace, il est important d'étudier de près les usages et de penser aux besoins de demain en agissant pas-à-pas. » conseille Laurent Geray. Sabre est un fournisseur de services et de produits pour l'industrie du voyage (gestion des réservations par exemple). Cet opérateur vient d'annoncer un contrat avec HP d'une valeur de 800 millions de dollars pour refondre son coeur d'infrastructure. Son secteur d'activité est caractérisé par une informatique extrêmement lourde et complexe avec une nécessité de très haute disponibilité. Dans les années 1970, l'informatique y avait été développée avec des outils et des systèmes souvent spécifiques sur des mainframes.

La migration pour quitter ce monde fermé, lourd à faire évoluer et coûteux à entretenir constitue un sujet essentiel pour le secteur. Amadeus, concurrent de Sabre, avait entrepris cette migration depuis plusieurs années, comme l'avait raconté Bertrand Kientz, Vice-Président Software Development Strategy d'Amadeus, en mai 2011. Sabre, lui, vient donc de confier la refonte de son coeur mondial d'infrastructure sur mainframes à HP dans le cadre de ce contrat géant. Seront notamment mises en place des solutions de stockage et de réseau HP comme HP 3PAR et HP Networking. Le contrat inclut également des services pour les environnements LAN/WAN, les PC portables et fixes, les imprimantes, les serveurs et les terminaux mobiles. Depuis plus de dix ans, HP fournit d'autres services à Sabre, notamment du support pour les postes de travail, des services d'impression et de la gestion des applications.Pour étoffer ses solutions de sécurité pour terminaux mobiles, Symantec met en avant les technologies de gestion des applications mobiles issues des rachats de Nukona et d'Odyssey Software.

La sécurité mobile est devenue un élément de premier plan pour les entreprises, et la course entre Symantec et McAfee - propriété d'Intel - est relancée. L'enjeu : résoudre le casse-tête du « Bring your own device » (Byod), qui consiste à laisser tout salarié utiliser son terminal personnel pour ses besoins professionnels, et qui préoccupe les services informatiques. Pour l'instant, si l'on en juge par la dernière annonce faite par Symantec lors de sa conférence annuelle Vision, il semble que le vendeur a pris l'avantage sur son traditionnel rival. Mardi dernier, Symantec a donc déployé sa technologie de gestion des applications mobiles héritée de l'acquisition de Nukona, réalisée le mois dernier. Le vendeur devrait abandonner prochainement la marque Nukona au profit de Symantec. Le dernier produit du vendeur vient directement enrichir son portefeuille consacré à la sécurité des points d'accès, et frappe au coeur de ce que les sociétés recherchent le plus aujourd'hui : le verrouillage des données professionnelles sur l'appareil mobile des salariés. La tendance au « Bring your own device » est une source de nuits blanches pour les administrateurs de services informatiques qui doivent bloquer les salariés, qui désirent utiliser leurs propres tablettes et smartphones, envoyer des courriers électroniques professionnels via leurs comptes de messagerie personnelle Gmail ou échanger des données professionnelles en utilisant des systèmes de partage de fichiers comme Dropbox ou SugarSync.

La technologie PMR donnera la possibilité d'atteindre le téraoctet par pouce carré dans les prochaines années, qui marquera aussi la limite supérieure de cette technologie, comme l'ont annoncé Seagate et d'autres constructeurs. « Les opportunités de croissance se trouvent dans des secteurs où les applications demandent beaucoup d'espace de stockage de masse, comme les jeux, et les enregistreurs vidéo numériques (DVR), où il faut de très grosses capacités pour stocker la vidéo haute définition », a déclaré Zhang Fang.

C'est en septembre 2011 que Seagate avait fièrement commencé à livrer le disque à plus haute densité surfacique du marché. Conçu pour les applications de bureau, celui-ci loge 4 To dans un disque de 3,5 pouces. Le lecteur comporte cinq plateaux de 625 Go par pouce carré, soit l'équivalent de plus de 1 To de capacité par plateau. L'association MacBook et iPad ne fonctionnera jamais, et c'est pourquoi l'ambition de Microsoft de faire converger Windows 8 sur des tablettes et des PC portables sera un désastre, a estimé le PDG d'Apple Tim Cook. Pour lui, l'idée qui consiste à faire tourner cet OS sur des PC de bureau, portables, netbooks, tablettes et PC media Center, est aussi utile que de combiner un grille-pain avec un réfrigérateur. Il estime aussi que pour rendre Windows 8 performant, quelques compromis devront être réalisés.

Au cours d'une conférence téléphonique avec des analystes qui a eu lieu hier, après la publication des résultats financiers du groupe, Tim Cook a déclaré : « On peut toujours forcer la convergence. Mais le problème c'est que les produits sont faits de compromis. Vous commencez à en faire jusqu'au moment où finalement personne n'est satisfait. On peut associer un grille-pain et un réfrigérateur, mais cela ne contentera probablement pas les utilisateurs. ». C'est pour cette raison que le PDG affirme qu'Apple ne combinera jamais le MacBook et l'iPad. De trop nombreux arrangements seraient nécessaires et ces deux types de produits sont utilisés trop différemment.Tim Cook s'est référé aux études du Gartner qui montrent que le marché des tablettes va croître au cours des trois prochaines années. Il a également déclaré que des systèmes tels que le MacBook auront du potentiel dans la durée, dans la mesure où ils d'adressent à des personnes ayant des exigences particulières. «. StarTech a annoncé un connecteur Thunderbolt de trois mètres qui est le plus long câble de cuivre disponible actuellement. Les deux modèles, WiFi et 3G, exploitent en effet les fonctionnalités d'appels vidéo et vocaux de Skype. Après avoir téléchargé le logiciel via le PlayStation Network, les joueurs auront la possibilité d'"y avoir accès, tout en jouant ou en employant d'autres applications", explique Sony.

Free Mobile vient enfin de mettre en place l'achat à crédit des terminaux mobiles. Les abonnés ont le choix entre 24 et 36 mensualités, pour un coût total sans intérêt comparé à un paiement comptant. Actuellement, six modèles bénéficient de cette facilité de paiement.Les appareils concernés sont les ZTE F160 et Blade S, le Huawei U8350, le BlackBerry Curve 3G et les Samsung Galaxy Y et Galaxy Ace. Seul le Samsung Galaxy S2 demeure payable uniquement au comptant. Depuis mars dernier, Sosh propose déjà l'acquisition de mobiles d'occasion, des terminaux reconditionnés, nettoyés, testés et réinitialisés. De son côté, Bouygues propose un service équivalent, en association avec Recommerce Solutions.Le recyclage de mobiles est un phénomène en vogue, y compris chez les constructeurs, comme Apple par exemple avec son programme de recyclage d'ordinateurs et de terminaux mobiles. La marque low-cost Sosh a vu le jour en septembre 2011, à l'initiative d'Orange, et revendique plus de 200.000 clients (fin mars). Alors que la Fédération e-commerce et vente à distance (Fevad) dresse son bilan trimestriel ce jeudi 10 mai, faisant état de 31 millions de cyberacheteurs en France, une étude CCM Benchmark vient ajouter que 45% des sites de e-commerce sont aujourd'hui adaptés dans une version lisible pour les smartphones. Ils étaient moitié moins il y a un an (22%). D'ici la fin 2012, près des trois-quarts des sites de e-commerce en France pourraient s'accompagner d'une version pour les smartphones. Avec 45% de plateformes qui en bénéficient déjà, 24% envisagent justement d'en créer une cette année.

Pour l'heure, ce sont les téléphones Apple qui concentrent les deux-tiers des ventes effectuées via smartphones. Le m-commerce ne représente au demeurant que 3% des ventes en ligne des sites internet qui ont pensé à adapter leur plateforme pour les téléphones portables.Autre axe majeur de développement pour le e-commerce : les tablettes. 26% des plateformes marchandes comptent permettre à leurs clients de faire leur shopping sur une interface dédiée à leur tablette. Aujourd'hui, c'est l'iPad qui concentre plus des deux tiers des ventes en ligne via ces nouveaux outils technologiques. Un malware très sophistiqué, principalement utilisé pour mener des attaques de cyberespionnage au Moyen-Orient, a été identifié et analysé par des chercheurs de plusieurs entreprises et agences de sécurité.

Selon l'Iranian Computer Emergency Response Team (MAHER), le nouveau morceau de malware baptisé Flame pourrait être à l'origine de récents incidents constatés en Iran, ayant eu pour conséquence la perte de données informatiques. « Il y a aussi lieu de penser que ce malware est lié à Stuxnet et Duqu, deux vecteurs d'attaques utilisés dans des actions de cyberespionnage » a déclaré MAHER. Des chercheurs spécialisés de Kaspersky Lab ayant également analysé le malware ont constaté que, si Flame ressemblait à Stuxnet et à Duqu en termes de cible et de propagation géographique, il présentait des caractéristiques différentes et surtout, qu'il était, à bien des égards, plus complexe.

Flame, comme l'ont surnommé les chercheurs de Kaspersky, est une très grosse boîte à outils d'attaque comportant de nombreux modules autonomes. Il peut effectuer une série d'actions malveillantes, qui consistent la plupart du temps à voler des données et à mener des actions de cyberespionnage. Entre autres choses, Flame sait utiliser le microphone d'un ordinateur pour enregistrer des conversations, effectuer des captures d'écran dans certaines applications, enregistrer des frappes au clavier, filtrer le trafic réseau et communiquer en Bluetooth avec des périphériques compatibles situés à proximité. « Une première version de cette boîte à outils a probablement été créée en 2010. Par la suite, ses fonctionnalités ont été étendues, tirant parti de son architecture modulaire », a déclaré Vitaly Kamluk, expert en malware chez Kaspersky Lab.

Flame est notamment beaucoup plus gros que Duqu et Stuxnet, qui pèsent environ 500 Ko chacun, une taille déjà considérée comme importante par les experts en sécurité. « Prise dans son ensemble, la taille de toutes les composantes de Flame atteint plus de 20 Mo, dont un fichier particulier qui pèse plus de 6 Mo à lui tout seul », a déclaré Vitaly Kamluk. Autre aspect intéressant concernant la menace, c'est que certaines parties de Flame ont été écrites en LUA, un langage de programmation très rarement utilisé pour le développement de logiciels malveillants et que l'on rencontre plutôt dans l'industrie du jeu vidéo. « C'est la première fois que chez Kaspersky Lab nous tombons sur des échantillons de logiciels malveillants écrits dans ce langage », a déclaré l'expert en malware. Flame se propage d'un ordinateur à l'autre en s'autocopiant sur des périphériques USB portables. Il exploitait également une vulnérabilité dans la fonction imprimante de Microsoft Windows aujourd'hui corrigée qui avait été aussi mise à profit par Stuxnet.

Pour l'instant, les chercheurs de Kaspersky n'ont pas trouvé d'éléments indiquant que le malware exploite ou non une vulnérabilité Zero-Day inconnue, mais ils savent que Flame a réussi à infecter un ordinateur sous Windows 7 tout à fait à jour, « si bien que cette éventualité n'est pas totalement exclue », a déclaré Vitaly Kamluk. Pour infecter des ordinateurs protégés par des programmes antivirus, Flame évite d'effectuer certaines actions ou d'exécuter du code malveillant qui pourrait déclencher une détection proactive de la part des applications de sécurité. « C'est comme ça que le malware a réussi à échapper à nos radars de détection pendant tout ce temps », a expliqué l'expert en sécurité. En vérifiant les données de son réseau mondial de capteurs chargés de repérer les logiciels malveillants, Kaspersky Lab a réussi à identifier des infections actuelles et passées de Flame au Moyen-Orient et en Afrique, principalement dans des pays comme l'Iran, Israël, le Soudan, la Syrie, le Liban, l'Arabie Saoudite et l'Égypte.

Certains ont jugé, d'après les pré-versions, que l'interface n'était pas optimisée pour la productivité en environnement de travail. Eight va aussi conserver les fonctionnalités classiques de Windows, comme l'interface, mais certains testeurs ont trouvé que le passage de l'interface Metro vers l'interface classique n'était ni pratique et ni aisée.Ce qui est sûr, c'est que Microsoft va se battre pour inciter les entreprises à adopter son futur OS. « Windows 8 est prêt pour l'entreprise et a été conçu pour ça », a déclaré Antoine Leblond, vice-président corporate de Windows Web Services, en prologue à son discours. Pendant 90 minutes, lui-même et Linda Averett, qui dirige la gestion des projets Windows, se sont relayés tout à tour sur scène pour présenter les nouvelles fonctions de Windows 8 et les améliorations « essentielles » apportées au nouvel OS pour son usage en entreprise.

Eight est «un meilleur Windows » que Seven, a déclaré Antoine Leblond. « Windows 7 prend ses racines dans Windows 95, et en tant que tel, il a été conçu pour un monde où la plupart des appareils étaient des ordinateurs de bureau connectés à une prise de courant. Antoine Leblond et Linda Averett ont également présenté plusieurs applications destinées à l'entreprise et développées pour l'interface Metro par des partenaires - dont un prototype d'application SAP pour la prévision des ventes. Ceux-ci voulaient mettre en avant le fait que le « look-and-feel » Metro donnait plus de lisibilité aux applications et contribuait à rendre l'expérience utilisateur plus productive. Ils ont également montré que l'on pouvait avoir plus d'une application Metro ouverte à la fois sur l'écran, et comment basculer entre l'interface Metro et l'interface traditionnelle de Windows 7. Ils ont aussi passé en revue les améliorations apportées à Eight en matière de sécurité, de virtualisation, de gestion et de performance, réïtérant le fait que Windows 8 permettrait non seulement de faire tourner des applications Metro, mais aussi celles construites pour Windows 7. Cela ne sera cependant pas vrai pour la version de Windows 8 qui tournera sur des dispositifs à base de processeur ARM. Cette version d'Eight, appelée Windows RT, ne pourra faire tourner que des applications Metro natives. Mais les terminaux sous Windows RT pourront néanmoins faire tourner des applications Seven distantes, hébergées dans un datacenter à l'aide de la technologie Windows Remote Desktop.

Le vice-président corporate de Windows Web Services a aussi montré comment Visual Studio 2012 pouvait être utilisé pour construire des applications Metro, soulignant au passage que les développeurs pourraient utiliser leurs compétences et leurs connaissances en programmation actuelles. « Visual Studio 2012 a été conçu pour permettre aux développeurs de construire des apps Window 8 sans apprentissage supplémentaire », a-t-il dit. « Tout ce qu'il contient reste extrêmement familier et confère aux développeurs une longueur d'avance pour créer des apps Windows 8 », a-t-il ajouté.Hier, Microsoft a également annoncé des améliorations à sa suite d'outils de gestion IT Desktop Optimization Pack (MDOP), et la disponibilité en bêta de la version 2.0 de BitLocker Administration et Monitoring (MBAM), qui simplifie le processus de provisionnement de BitLocker. Il intègre la dernière puce Core i7 d'Intel, nom de code Ivy Bridge, dont la vitesse d'horloge peut atteindre 2,7 GHz, voire 3,2 GHz dans certains cas. Côté stockage, Apple a opté pour des SSD dont la une capacité peut atteindre 768 Go. Enfin, le dernier MacBook affiche une autonomie de 7 heures et accepte jusqu'à 16 Go de RAM.Le MacBook Pro dispose aussi de deux ports Thunderbolt, de connecteurs USB 3.0, du Wi-Fi 802.11n, du Bluetooth 4.0 et d'une caméra FaceTime haute définition mais plus d'Ethernet (un adaptateur USB est proposé en option comme pour le MacBook Air). Une version avec le dernier processeur graphique Nvidia GeForce GT 650M sera également proposée.Pour un modèle 15 pouces Retina, Core i7 quadricoeur cadencé à 2,3 GHz, avec 8 Go de RAM, un processeur graphique Intel HD 4000, une carte graphique Nvidia GeForce GT 650M et 256 Go de stockage flash, il faut compter 2279 euros. Pour un modèle 15 pouces Retina, Core i7 quadricoeur à 2,6 GHz, 8 Go de RAM, 512 Go de stockage flash, un circuit graphique Intel HD 4000, une carte graphique GeForce GT 650M, il faut compter 2899 euros. D'autres configurations sont aussi disponibles.

Hier, Apple a également actualisé son MacBook Air. Le dernier modèle intègre les derniers processeurs Intel dual-core Core i5 et des ports USB 3.0. Il pourra accepter jusqu'à 4 Go de RAM et jusqu'à 512 Go de stockage flash. Le prix pour un MackBook Air de 11pouces avec un processeur dual-core Core i5 cadencé à 1,7 GHz, 4 Mo de RAM et 64 Go de stockage flash démarre à 1.049 euros (la version avec 128 Go de mémoire flash démarre à 1149 euros). Le prix du MacBook Air 13 pouces en 128 Go démarre à 1249 euros (la version avec 256 Go de mémoire flash démarre à 1549 euros).L'entreprise californienne a également mis à jour ses MacBook Pro 13 et 15 pouces équipé d'une dalle classique en les équipant des derniers processeurs Ivy Bridge. Ces modèles sont proposés en versions Core i5 et Core i7 bicoeur ou quadricoeur, et tournant à des vitesses d'horloge pouvant atteindre 2,7 GHz voire 3,2 GHz dans des circonstances spécifiques (mode turbo). Le prix des MacBook Pro 13 pouces Core i5 bicoeur à 2,5 GHz démarre à 1249 euros. Celui des modèles 15 pouces avec processeur Core i7 quadricoeur démarre à 1879 euros.

Tous les MacBook d'Apple profitent de fonctions graphiques plus rapides que les versions précédentes, comme l'a précisé Apple. Ces ordinateurs portables sont disponibles immédiatement. Alors que Windows 8 entre dans sa phase finale de développement, Microsoft encourage les développeurs de produits commerciaux et ceux qui travaillent en interne pour des entreprises, à commencer à concevoir des applications Metro pour le prochain système d'exploitation qui tournera sur des PC et des tablettes.Selon un responsable de la firme de Redmond, dans la mesure où Windows 8 est encore en version de test - Release Preview - il est possible que les applications créées aujourd'hui devront être modifiées pour prendre en compte tous les changements apportés à l'OS d'ici sa sortie. Ce n'est pourtant pas le sentiment de tout le monde. Selon Al Gillen, analyste chez IDC, les développeurs d'applications commerciales ne sont pas aussi attirés par Windows 8 et l'interface utilisateur Metro qu'ils devraient l'être. « Ils sont dans l'expectative et attendent de voir les réactions suscitées par Win8 au moment de sa sortie, et si le produit se montre convaincant », a déclaré l'analyste. « Cela signifie que Microsoft va avoir du mal à mettre des applications dans sa boutique Windows pour favoriser le succès de Windows 8 ». Eight va également intégrer le traditionnel bureau de l'interface Windows, afin de permettre aux utilisateurs de basculer entre l'interface classique et l'interface Metro.Microsoft n'a pas fixé de date de sortie officielle pour Windows 8, mais la plupart des observateurs pensent que le prochain système sera prêt avant la fin de l'année. Les applications Windows 8 Metro peuvent être développées avec la version 2012 de Visual Studio, elle-même en pre-release, même si elle est certifiée par Microsoft pour le développement d'applications de production. Bien connu pour ses imprimantes, HP ne proposait pas encore de périphérique multifonctions nomade, c'est à dire équipé de batteries. C'est désormais chose faite avec l'OfficeJet 150.

HP annonce sa première imprimante multifonctions mobile, l'Officejet 150 L'imprimante portable OfficeJet 150 Mobile All-in-One, annoncée hier par Hewlett-Packard est, selon le constructeur, le premier périphérique multifonctions mobile capable « d'imprimer, de copier et de numériser partout où on l'emmène ». HP destine cette imprimante aux utilisateurs nomades qui pourront s'en servir comme imprimante, copieur et scanner qu'ils pourront emporter partout, comme les ordinateurs portables. L'appareil qui affiche un poids de 3 kg et mesure 35 x 17,1 x 90 mm, est plus léger que la plupart des imprimantes jet d'encre de bureau, ce qui le rend facile à déplacer dans un environnement donné ou entre différents lieux de travail.Si l'OfficeJet 150 est innovante en matière de design, elle semble toutefois aussi encombrante qu'un ordinateur portable haut de gamme pour joueur, et pas forcément très pratique à transporter au quotidien pour effectuer ses travaux d'impression. Le périphérique coute 399 dollars, soit un prix relativement élevé comparativement aux appareils multifonctions tout-en-un jet d'encre classique de HP, dont le prix démarre à moins de 100 dollars. HP doit commencer la commercialisation de l'OfficeJet 150 dans le monde entier ce mois-ci.

Pesticides, smoking, obesity, prolonged car driving and tight trousers had all been blamed for diminishing male potency while the mobile phone theory was suggested by Hungarian scientists this summer.Dr Sheynkin said, however, that except for an anecdotal report of genital burns, the effect of portable computers on scrotal temperature had not been known.

Laptop Akku Asus ZenBook UX32A

Die Verbindung zum Smartphone oder Tablet wird laut Angaben der Entwickler per Bluetooth aufgebaut. Der Akku des Armbands soll einen Betrieb von bis zu zehn Tagen ermöglichen und über USB wieder aufgeladen werden. Das Armband ist wasserdicht, so dass es der Benutzer im Alltag immer tragen kann. Die Apps sollen für Android und iOS entwickelt werden.Das Embrace Plus ist ungefähr 5,4 mm dick. Das gilt allerdings nicht für den Bereich, in dem Elektronik eingebaut ist. Hier soll das Armband einen Durchmesser von 8 mm erreichen.Das Projekt soll bei der Crowdfinanzierungsplattform Kickstarter 220.000 US-Dollar einbringen. Damit soll die Massenproduktion finanziert werden. Bislang sind allerdings erst rund 43.000 US-Dollar zusammengekommen. Das Projekt läuft noch bis zum 23. März 2013.

Mittlerweile ist AMD so weit, seine Temash genannte APU auch in einem funktionsfähigen Modell der Öffentlichkeit zu zeigen. Das Konzept-Tablet bietet ein PCI-Express-Dock, zusätzliche Kühlung und motorisierte Dockingklammern. AMD hat auf dem Mobile World Congress ein ungewöhnliches PCIe-Dock für Tablets gezeigt. AMD nennt es Turbo Dock, denn im eingesetzten Zustand wird das Tablet mit einem höheren Takt betrieben. Mit Benchmarks und Taktfrequenzen hielt sich AMD noch zurück. Die Leistungsunterschiede zwischen dem gedockten und ungedockten Zustand wurden aber immerhin schon grob an einem Browsertest gezeigt. Eingesetzt wird AMDs neues Temash-System-on-a-Chip (SoC), das auf der winzigen Jaguar-Architektur basiert und mit zwei unterschiedlichen Taktfrequenzen betrieben wird.

Ermöglicht wird das durch ein Lüftungskonzept, das das Dock miteinbezieht. Wird das Tablet eingesteckt, schießt das Dock zusätzlich Luft durch das Tablet, das dann mit einem höher getakteten SoC arbeitet. AMD gab für sein Referenzgerät 40 Prozent mehr Leistung seines Quad-Core-SoCs an. Das kann aber von Hersteller zu Hersteller variieren, sofern sie das von Compal gefertigte Konzept umsetzen. Ohne das Dock wird das 13-Zoll-Tablet trotzdem aktiv gekühlt, allerdings mit weniger Luftdurchsatz.Zusätzlich kann AMD im Dock auch eine separate Grafikeinheit unterbringen, da das Tablet per PCIe angebunden wird. Interessanterweise wird die Tastatur aber per Wigig angebunden, damit sie weiterarbeitet, selbst wenn das Tablet woanders steht. Da es 13 Zoll in der Diagonalen misst (1.920 x 1.080 Pixel), würde sich das durchaus anbieten. Das vorgeführte Modell hatte jedoch noch keinen eigenen Grafikchip, sondern nur den Grafikkern des Temash, der unter der Serie Radeon HD 8000 vermarktet wird. Vermutlich für eine bessere Verbindung wird das Tablet mit Klammern im Dock festgehalten. Ein von der Software gesteuerter Motor sorgt dafür, dass sich die Vorrichtung schließt und so das Tablet nicht einfach herausfallen kann.

Beim Abspielen eines Videos soll das Quadcore-Tablet in der frühen Version rund 6 Stunden durchhalten. Mit finalen Geräten wird sich dies noch einmal verbessern, verspricht AMD. Über das Dock wird auch ein Akku bereitgestellt. Beide bieten jeweils 41 Wattstunden. Zusätzlich können im Dock Laufwerke (HDD oder ODD) und Schnittstellen untergebracht werden. Das Compal-Konzept ist 11 mm dick. Mit dem Dock kommen laut AMD noch einmal 13,5 mm dazu.Auch eine APU mit zwei Kernen soll auf den Markt kommen. Tablets mit diesem SoC werden keine Lüftung benötigen. Bis es so weit ist, dauert es aber noch mindestens einige Monate. AMDs Temash soll erst im zweiten Halbjahr 2013 auf den Markt kommen. Zur CES zeigte sich AMD noch zuversichtlicher und wollte bereits im zweiten Quartal mit Geräten auf den Markt kommen.

AMD zeigte auch andere lauffähige Systeme mit kommenden Prozessorgenerationen, dazu gehörten die Prozessoren mit den Codenamen Kabini und Richland, die beide in Notebookdesigns gezeigt wurden. Richland wurde dabei einfach in ein handelsübliches HP-Notebook eingesteckt, das einen Sockel hat. Dieser Aufrüstweg ist aber AMD vorbehalten, da für die neue Richland-APU ein angepasstes Bios benötigt wird. Der CPU-Entwickler nannte weder Leistungsdaten noch andere Details und beschränkte sich nur auf Softwaredemos.Forscher in den USA haben einen Lithium-Ionen-Akku in ein elastisches Trägermaterial integriert. Dadurch wird der Stromspeicher selbst flexibel. Gedacht ist er unter anderem dazu, künftig Implantate im Körper mit Strom zu versorgen. Biegsame Sensoren und Displays gibt es schon, jetzt haben US-Forscher dazu den passenden Akku entwickelt: Er ist elastisch und kann gefaltet oder um das Mehrfache seiner Größe gedehnt werden.

Bei dem Akku handelt es sich um einen Lithium-Ionen-Akku, der in ein durchsichtiges Silikon eingebettet ist. Das elastische Substrat macht auch den Akku biegsam. Er soll künftig flexible Schaltkreise mit Energie versorgen, etwa Implantate, die Funktionen im Körper überwachen.Sie hätten die Akkuzellen nebeneinander auf engem Raum angeordnet, erklärt Yonggang Huang von der Northwestern-Universität in Evanston im US-Bundesstaat Illinois. Diese hätten sie mit gewendelten Metalldrähten verbunden. "Die Drähte liefern die Elastizität. Wenn wir den Akku dehnen, entfalten sich die welligen Verbindungen, ähnlich wie Garn abgespult wird. So können wir den Akku erheblich dehnen, und er funktioniert immer noch."

Die Verbindungen bestehen aus langen Drähten, die in den Zwischenräumen zwischen den Zellen verstaut werden. Sie sind auf eine besondere Weise gewendelt, die die Forscher als Feder in einer Feder bezeichnen: Eine Verbindung zwischen zwei Komponenten ist S-förmig, und in jedem S sind kleinere S-förmige Schleifen. Wird der Akku gedehnt oder gebogen, werden erst die großen und danach die kleinen Schleifen gestreckt.Der Akku lasse sich um bis zu 300 Prozent dehnen, schreiben die Forscher in der Fachzeitschrift Nature. Der Prozess sei zudem umkehrbar: Werde der Akku nicht mehr gedehnt oder geknickt, kehrten die Drähte wieder in ihre Ausgangsposition zurück.

Für einen Test schlossen die Forscher an den Akku eine Leuchtdiode (LED) an. Dann falteten, dehnten und verdrehten sie ihn und brachten ihn an einem Ellenbogen an. Der Akku ließ sich von all dem nicht beeindrucken und versorgte die LED weiterhin mit Strom. Acht bis neun Stunden habe er dabei durchgehalten. Geladen wird der Akku drahtlos per Induktion. Der Prototyp überstand 20 Ladezyklen mit nur wenig Kapazitätsverlust.Hinter dem Projekt stehen zwei Experten für elastische Elektronik: Huang und sein Kollege John Rogers von der Universität von Illinois in Urbana-Champaign arbeiten schon seit rund sechs Jahren zusammen an elastischen Schaltkreisen. 2011 stellten sie einen flexiblen Sensor vor, der auf die Haut aufgeklebt wird.Ein neues Kickstarter-Projekt soll Geld für die Produktion einer Maus zusammenbringen, die auch als 3D-Controller und mobiler Speicher genutzt werden kann. Im Inneren steckt ein kompletter Rechner mit Linux als Betriebssystem. Die Ego Smartmouse sieht zwar aus wie eine normale Maus, sie kann aber viel mehr als nur einen Cursor am Bildschirm zu steuern. Dafür soll eine Menge Sensortechnik eingebaut werden.

Der Beschleunigungs- und Lagesensor sowie ein elektronischer Kompass ermöglichen den Einsatz als 3D-Controller, mit dem zum Beispiel Ordner geöffnet und Programme gestartet werden können. Neben Windows soll auch Mac OS X unterstützt werden.Die Oberfläche der optischen Maus ist wie beispielsweise die Magic Mouse von Apple berührungsempfindlich. Außerdem ist eine VGA-Kamera eingebaut, mit der QR-Codes zum Aufbau der Bluetooth-Verbindung abfotografiert werden können.Damit die Verbindung zum Rechner aufgebaut wird, muss aber zudem noch ein Knopf an der Maus gedrückt werden. Der eingebaute, maximal 8 GByte große Speicher erscheint als Laufwerk am Rechner, mit dem die Maus gekoppelt ist. Damit können zum Beispiel Bookmarks, Dokumente und Ähnliches transportiert werden. Ein Lithium-Polymer-Akku sorgt für die Stromversorgung. Nach 8 Stunden Betrieb muss die Maus über Micro-USB wieder aufgeladen werden.

Die Ego Smartmouse basiert nach Angaben der Entwickler auf Linux, das auf einem mit 400 MHz getakteten ARM9-Prozessor läuft.Die vollgestopfte Maus soll von dem britischen Unternehmen Laura Sapiens gebaut werden. Dafür werden aber 20.000 britische Pfund (rund 23.000 Euro) benötigt, die über die Crowdfinanzierungsplattform Kickstarter besorgt werden sollen. Einige Prototypen wurden bereits gebaut.Die Preisliste beginnt bei 70 Pfund (80 Euro) für ein Modell mit 2 GByte Speicher und endet bei 140 Euro für das 8-GByte-Modell. Bislang sind erst gut 6.000 Pfund zusammengekommen. Das Projekt läuft aber noch bis zum 12. April 2013.Der BT Smart Trigger von Satechi macht das iPhone oder das iPad zum schlauen Fernauslöser für Canon-DSLRs. Das Gerät wird wie ein Aufsteckblitz montiert und per Bluetooth angesteuert. Der Satechi BT Smart Trigger ist ein Fernauslöser, der über iOS-Geräte gesteuert werden kann, die Bluetooth 4.0 beherrschen. Er wird über den Blitzschuh an der Canon-DSLRs befestigt. Der Smart Trigger nimmt über den USB-Anschluss Kontakt mit der Kamera auf - der Blitzschuh dient nur als Halterung.

Die passende iOS-App kann aber noch mehr als nur auf Knopfdruck ein Bild machen: Wer will, kann auch Intervallaufnahmen mit beliebigen Zeitabständen machen. Zusammengefasst als Film können so sehr langsam ablaufende Vorgänge visualisiert werden - das Wachstum von Pflanzen ist dafür ein Beispiel. Wer Langzeitbelichtungen machen will, kann mit der App den Verschluss manuell öffnen und wieder schließen.Wie lange der Akku des Fernauslösers läuft, gab der Hersteller nicht an. Die Reichweite liegt bei gut 10 Metern. Bei der Vollformatkamera Canon 6D ist das Gerät überflüssig - weil diese Kamera mit eingebautem WLAN ausgerüstet ist. Dafür bietet Canon eine eigene App an. Sie erlaubt ebenfalls die Nutzung des iPhones oder iPads als Fernauslöser und übermittelt im Gegensatz zum Modell von Satechi auch das Livebild der Kamera auf das iOS-Gerät.

Laptop Akku ASUS Eee PC 1201PN

m Inneren des Smartphones arbeitet ein Snapdragon-200-Quad-Core-Prozessor von Qualcomm, dessen A5-Kerne auf 1,2 GHz getaktet sind. Der eingebaute Flash-Speicher ist mit 4 GByte klein geraten, ein Steckplatz für Micro-SD-Karten bis 32 GByte ist eingebaut. Laut HTC können Apps auf die Karte verschoben werden. Die Größe des Arbeitsspeichers beträgt 1 GByte. Das Desire 500 unterstützt Quad-Band-GSM und UMTS auf den Frequenzen 900 und 2.100 MHz mit HSDPA bis 7,2 MByte/s und HSUPA bis 5,76 MByte/s. WLAN beherrscht das Smartphone nach 802.11b/g/n auf der Frequenz 2,4 GHz. Bluetooth läuft in der Version 4.0, ein GPS-Empfänger ist eingebaut. Außerdem ist das Desire 500 DLNA-fähig.

 

Auf der Rückseite des Smartphones ist eine 8-Megapixel-Kamera mit Autofokus und LED-Blitz eingebaut. Die Kamera hat einen BSI-Sensor und eine Anfangsblendenöffnung von f/2.0. Die Frontkamera für Videotelefonie hat 1,6 Megapixel. Mit HTC Zoe kann der Nutzer statt eines Fotos kurze Videoclips aufnehmen. Mit der Video-Highlight-Funktion werden diese dann zusammen mit anderen Fotos zu einem 30-sekündigen Video zusammengeschnitten und mit Musik unterlegt. Ausgeliefert wird das Smartphone mit Android 4.1.2 und HTCs eigener Benutzeroberfläche Sense 5.Das Desire 500 hat einen Lithium-Polymer-Akku mit einer Nennladung von 1.800 mAh und soll laut HTC eine Gesprächszeit von bis zu 17,8 Stunden im 3G-Modus ermöglichen. Ein US-Wissenschaftler hat Abhilfe geschaffen: Er hat einen einfachen und günstigen Roboter gebaut, der diese Aufgaben übernehmen kann. Der V-förmige Roboter ist sehr einfach gehalten: Er besteht aus zwei Armen, die mit einem Gelenk verbunden sind. In dem Gelenk sitzt als Antrieb ein Motor. An jedem Arm ist eine Klemme, die ebenfalls mit einem Motor ausgestattet ist.Der Roboter hängt an einem Seil und bewegt sich hangelnd vorwärts: Der Motor im Gelenk beugt und streckt die Arme - ähnlich wie ein Ellenbogen. Die Motoren in den Klemmen packen jeweils zu, um ein Abrutschen zu verhindern.

Der Roboter sei dazu gedacht, Strom- oder Telefonleitung zu kontrollieren, sagt Nick Morozovsky, der den Skysweeper ersonnen hat. Der Roboter könne dafür mit Sensoren ausgestattet werden, die den Zustand der Kabel überwachen oder messen, wie viel Energie durch die Leitung fließe. Denkbar sei zudem ein Einsatz auf Hängebrücken.Der Roboter hat zwar einen Akku an Bord. Bei der Inspektion von Stromleitungen könne er aber auch mit einer Induktionsspule ausgestattet werden, die das elektrische Feld um die Leitung anzapfe, erklärt der Entwickler von der Universität von Kalifornien in San Diego (UCSD). So könne der Roboter Wochen und Monate auf Inspektion bleiben.Der Roboter ist bewusst einfach gehalten: Die Elektronikbauteile stammen aus dem Fachhandel. Die Kunststoffteile wie Arme und Klemmen sind mit dem 3D-Drucker hergestellt. Der Roboter könne für weniger als 1.000 US-Dollar produziert werden, sagt Morozovsky. Die derzeit existierenden Roboter für die Inspektion von Stromleitungen seien deutlich teurer. Ansonsten werden die Leitungen von bemannten oder unbemannten Hubschraubern aus kontrolliert.

Morozovsky will den Skysweeper auf der International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (Iros) vorstellen, die vom 3. bis zum 8. November 2013 in der japanischen Hauptstadt Tokio stattfindet. Zuvor nimmt er mit dem Roboter noch an dem Wettbewerb Road to Maker Faire Challenge teil, um den Skysweeper auf dem großen US-Maker-Faire vorstellen zu können.Blackberrys Q5 ist günstiger als das Q10 und soll Vieltippern das Leben erleichtern: Zwar ist es etwas leistungsschwächer, die lange Akkulaufzeit sollte aber den Schreibefluss nicht so schnell bremsen. Ob auch die Tastatur etwas taugt, zeigt es im Test. Blackberry hat kurz nach der Veröffentlichung des Q10 ein weiteres Tastatursmartphone mit dem Betriebssystem Blackberry 10 (BB10) in den Handel gebracht. Das Q5 ist eine etwas leistungsschwächere Variante des Q10, die dementsprechend weniger kostet. Dabei unterscheidet sich das Q5 vor allem in der Leistungsfähigkeit des Prozessors, der Kameraqualität und der Wahl des Gehäusematerials vom Q10. Das Tastaturlayout ist identisch.

Die Tastatur dominiert wie beim Q10 die Vorderseite des Q5. Die Tasten sind in vier Reihen angeordnet, wobei sich die Buchstaben in den oberen drei Reihen befinden. Zahlen liegen nicht wie bei vielen anderen Tastaturen als Zweitbelegung auf der obersten Reihe, sondern in einem Block auf der linken Seite der Tastatur. Das ist zunächst etwas gewöhnungsbedürftig, dafür können Zahlenkolonnen bequem und schnell mit nur einem Finger eingegeben werden.

 

Großbuchstaben erhält der Nutzer, indem er länger auf eine Buchstabentaste drückt oder die Umstelltaste verwendet. Die Zweitbelegung der Tasten mit Sonderzeichen und Zahlen erreicht der Anwender, indem er vorher die Alt-Taste drückt. Es gibt nur eine auf der linken Seite, was das Tippen mit einem Finger etwas lästig macht: Selbst um ein Komma einzugeben, muss die Alt-Taste vorher gedrückt werden, weshalb Rechtshänder oft bis zur gegenüberliegenden Seite der Tastatur greifen müssen. Über die Symboltaste können alle Sonderzeichen auch auf dem Touchscreen eingeblendet und ausgewählt werden.

 

Die Tasten stehen nicht allzu sehr aus dem Gehäuse hervor und haben einen angenehmen Druckpunkt. Trotz der geringen Größe lassen sich auch längere Texte nach kurzer Eingewöhnungszeit schnell und sicher tippen. Dabei ist das Tippen mit beiden Händen deutlich schneller, zuverlässiger und dank der für Satzzeichen nötigen Alt-Taste auch bequemer. Bei dunkler Umgebungsbeleuchtung schaltet das Q5 automatisch die dezente Hintergrundbeleuchtung der Tastatur ein.Kaum für den Nutzer spürbar sind die Tasten leicht abgeflacht: Auf der linken Seite fallen sie nach links ab, auf der rechten nach rechts. Zum Rand des Smartphones hin ist diese Abflachung stärker, was beim beidhändigen Tippen ergonomisch von Vorteil sein könnte. Wie andere BB10-Geräte kann auch das Q5 bei der Texteingabe Wörter vorausahnen: Kontextabhängig macht es dem Nutzer Vorschläge für das nächste Wort. Bei einfachen Texten ist die Funktion durchaus zuverlässig.

Aufgrund der fest eingebauten Tastatur ist das IPS-Display mit 3,1 Zoll verglichen mit dem anderer Smartphones relativ klein. Es hat eine Auflösung von 720 x 720 Pixeln, was eine Pixeldichte von 329 ppi ergibt. Blackberrys teureres Tastatursmartphone Q10 hat einen gleich großen Bildschirm mit der gleichen Auflösung, dort ist es allerdings ein Super-Amoled-Display.Das Smartphone hat einen 3,1 Zoll großen Bildschirm und eine Tastatur mit 35 Tasten. Die Helligkeit ist hoch genug, damit Bildschirminhalte auch bei direkter Sonneneinstrahlung gut erkennbar sind. Das Displayglas des Q5 lässt sich leicht von Fingerabdrücken reinigen.

Der durch die Bauart des Q5 recht kleine, quadratische Touchscreen dürfte für manchen Nutzer gewöhnungsbedürftig sein. Beim Browser kann beispielsweise die Navigationsleiste nicht ausgeblendet werden, weshalb das sowieso schon recht kleine Bild noch kleiner ist. Internetseiten ohne spezielle mobile Ansicht zu betrachten, ist daher mit dem Q5 häufig etwas lästig. Bei anderen Anwendungen wie Facebook oder dem Blackberry Hub fiel es uns leichter, uns an die geringe Displaygröße zu gewöhnen. Hier muss der Käufer zugunsten der physischen Tastatur einen Kompromiss eingehen.Da das Q5 einen quadratischen Bildschirm hat, muss der Nutzer das Smartphone nicht im Querformatmodus verwenden - ein Lagesensor ist daher nicht nötig. Der Helligkeitssensor arbeitet ohne merkliche Verzögerung.Im Inneren des Q5 arbeitet ein Qualcomm-Snapdragon-S4-Dual-Core-Prozessor mit einer Taktrate von 1,2 GHz. Damit unterscheidet sich der Prozessor von dem des teureren Q10 nicht, lediglich die Taktrate ist beim Q10 mit 1,5 GHz höher. Wie das Q10 hat das Q5 2 GByte Arbeitsspeicher. Der eingebaute Flash-Speicher ist 8 GByte groß, ein Steckplatz für Micro-SD-Karten bis 32 GByte ist eingebaut. Das Q10 hat im Vergleich 16 GByte Flash-Speicher.

Das Blackberry Q5 ist 120 x 65,9 mm groß und mit 11,1 mm dicker als andere aktuelle Smartphones. Dies dürfte auch an der eingebauten Hardwaretastatur liegen. Das Smartphone wiegt 118 Gramm.Das Gehäuse ist aus Kunststoff, auf dem nicht abnehmbaren Rückdeckel ist das Blackberry-Logo eingelassen. Das Material fühlt sich weniger hochwertig an als die Oberfläche der anderen aktuellen Blackberry-Geräte wie des Z10. Dennoch ist das Q5 gut verarbeitet, das Gehäuse ist verwindungssteif und knarzt nicht. Metallelemente wie beim Q10 sucht der Nutzer beim Q5 vergeblich.Im Inneren des Q5 arbeitet ein Qualcomm-Snapdragon-S4-Dual-Core-Prozessor mit einer Taktrate von 1,2 GHz. If you can get to London, then Shyamtronics (246 Tottenham Court Road, W1T 7QU) is famous for stocking discontinued ThinkPads. They are not particularly cheap by modern standards, but you can haggle. Although it no longer has a shop in central London, Morgan is another potential source.

However, the only prospect it has at the moment is a refurbished ThinkPad X201i with a 2.5GHz Core i5 and Windows 7 Pro for £199.95.Otherwise, there is a very simple way to get an excellent keyboard with almost any laptop: simply plug an external keyboard into one of the USB ports. This has the added advantage that you can raise the laptop screen to a more ergonomic height, reducing the strain on your upper spine. It's not the handiest solution if you want to use your laptop on a train or plane, but a ThinkPad R50e weighs about 2.5kg (5.5lb), so I suspect you don't do that often.Using an external keyboard means you can opt for a clicky model, or possibly one with a more ergonomic shape, or both. They're lighter, just as efficient as their full-sized counterparts and retail figures published in January suggest everyone is buying them.To an extent this is right. For data gathering and for entertainment they're a great alternative. But they do have their limitations. These aren't bad points, it's just that they aren't full-spec computers and nobody has ever pretended they are.

The first very clear difference between a tablet and a laptop is the absence of a keyboard. If your tasks don't involve typing, or only involve a small amount of typing, then you can safely ignore this as a drawback. If you collect a lot of data door-to-door, as some professions do, then a small hand-held will almost certainly be better.For writing or number-intensive tasks then a keyboard is a given requirement. Voice control is good but many people will prefer an old-fashioned key-it-in approach. There are keyboards and keyboard cases for tablets but these vary in performance; early models tended to make characters appear a split second before they were typed, for example. Go to a shop and try one out; keyboard cases that hold plenty of charge are available for seven inch tablets and they work well, but the physical size means they're small and cramped to use.They also require independent charging which means organising yourself so that they don't conk out while you're in the middle of something. And keep an eye on the cost. A tablet plus keyboard case might well end up costing as much as a full-blown laptop.

One advantage of a laptop is its ability to use external storage media. If you have a large file on an external drive and can plug it in via USB, great – but this may not be possible without at least an adapter for your tablet, depending on which model of tablet you're using. And if you wanted to use a CD drive it's far simpler if it's built in to your computer (although these are being phased out on some laptops as well – an external CD drive connected through USB will still work).Related to external storage is internal storage. Download a file to your laptop, find the downloads file and you can send it to someone else. Download the same thing to your tablet and good luck finding where it's put it. Picking up more than one document and sending it by email starts to require a new app to help you work out just where they're located on the disk.This isn't a criticism – the essence of tablet computing is that it's supposed to hide some of the complexities from the person using it. They're supposed to be as easy to use as your phone and that means the manufacturers are going to conceal as much under the bonnet as they can. Which means you're going to get a slightly cut-down version of a computer when you use one.
One area in which tablets are better than standard computers is connectivity.

One or two computer manufacturers have in the past tried putting a sim card into a PC but for whatever reason these haven't sold in large numbers. This will surprise many people as connecting goes almost without saying for most computer tasks these days, but if you're out of Wi-Fi range and don't have a dongle or phone you can use as a modem, you might well find yourself stuck.Here the tablets can score as long as you buy the right model. Tablets with 3G (some of which will have 4G connections when they become available) will connect independently by themselves whenever you need them to; pay-as-you-go sims are available inexpensively and data allowances appear generous by most current standards.If you're going to be around Wi-Fi networks this is less of a concern – and of course a 3G signal can drop to something slower when you're not expecting it. Travel through even Central London by train and you'll be surprised at how often the signal drops – but that's going to be true of any connection.The area in which the tablet is really going to score is its configurability. You can download, subject to affordability and space on your device, multiple apps so you end up with the system you want rather than the one the manufacturer opted to provide. Be careful of upgrading your device, though; if (say) the screen size changes with the new model, or the screen resolution alters, there's no absolute guarantee that every app will work with the new version immediately. And if it's a corporate, business-essential app that fails, you could have a problem.This isn't about denigrating tablets. For the right task – online work, carrying entertainment as well as work information around for business trips, video conferencing and a great deal else they're terrific. They can also be very inexpensive; of course everyone knows who offers the premium brands, but the own-brand supermarket offerings function perfectly happily as well.It's just a matter of assessing exactly what you want to do and assessing the tools you'll need – then not falling for the hype when friends and marketing departments think you ought to have the latest and most expensive shiny device.

An alleged laptop thief has been arrested after his victim used a secret application on the computer to track its whereabouts and take photographs of the perpetrator.Joshua Kaufman's MacBook was stolen from his apartment in Oakland, California, on 21 March, but when he reported the crime to the police it was deemed a low priority – so he turned to Twitter and Tumblr to get it back.I reported the crime to the police and even told them where it was, but they couldn't help me due to lack of resources, Kaufman said.Rather than give up the laptop as lost the designer had a trick up his sleeve. Kaufman had downloaded an application to his computer that tracked the machine's location and took pictures from its inbuilt camera – unbeknown to the thief.I'm using the awesome app, Hidden, to capture these photos of this guy who has my MacBook, Kaufman wrote.He told the New York Daily News he had returned to his apartment on a Monday night in March to find the laptop, a Kindle and some jewellery missing.Kaufman called the police, but the case was filed as low priority.

Mit 19 g Abfluggewicht hält sich der ferngesteuerte Quadcopter ungefähr 7 Minuten in der Luft. Wer will, kann ihn mit etwas Bastelgeschick nachbauen. Die Pläne sind kostenlos erhältlich. Der Open-Source-Quadcopter Crazyflie misst ungefähr 9 x 9 cm und wiegt 19 g. Eine Nutzlast von 5 bis 10 g soll auch noch transportiert werden können. Die Baupläne und die dazugehörigen Stücklisten und Programme sind Open Source. Die Entwickler bieten auch zwei kommerzielle Versionen des Crazyflie an, die aber trotzdem noch selbst zusammengebaut werden müssen.

Der Unterschied zwischen den beiden Quadcoptern ist die Sensorausstattung. Das bessere und auch teurere Modell ist mit mehr Sensoren ausgerüstet. Beim Modell für 150 US-Dollar sind ein 3-Achsen-Beschleunigungs- und ein 3-Achsen-Gyroskop dabei. Damit kann der kleine Flieger selbstständig die Balance halten. Beim Modell für 173 US-Dollar sind noch ein elektronischer Kompass sowie ein Höhenmesser eingebaut. Für diese beiden Sensoren gibt es noch keine Firmware-Unterstützung, sie soll noch nachgeliefert werden.Die beiden Quadcopter sollen sich mit ihrem Lithium-Polymer-Akku 7 Minuten in der Luft halten können. Danach ist eine 20-minütige Ladepause an einem USB-Kabel erforderlich. Was im Bausatz nicht enthalten, aber für den Flugbetrieb erforderlich ist, sind neben einem PC ein PS3-kompatibler Controller zur Steuerung sowie das Ladekabel mit Mikro-USB-Anschluss. Zum Zusammenbau sind ein Lötkolben, Heißkleber und eine Pinzette notwendig.Im Bausatz von Bitcraze sind die Funkfernsteuerung mit USB-Anschluss, die Motoren, das Chassis, die Akkus, Antennen und die Propeller sowie diverse Kleinteile zur Montage enthalten.

Die Samsung-Kompaktkamera WB250F arbeitet mit einem hintergrundbelichteten CMOS-Sensor mit 14,2 Megapixeln Auflösung im Format 1/2,3 Zoll, der besonders rauscharm sein soll. Trotz des recht kompakten Gehäuses mit Maßen von 106,05 x 61,65 x 21,65 mm hat Samsung es geschafft, ein 18fach-Zoomobjektiv in die Kamera zu integrieren. Es deckt einen Brennweitenbereich von 24 bis 432 mm (KB) ab.

Wer neben dem Fotografieren auch noch filmen will, kann bei der WB250F beides verbinden. Die Kamera filmt in Full-HD mit 30 Bildern pro Sekunde und kann parallel auch noch Fotos aufnehmen. Gespeichert werden die Aufnahmen auf SDXC-Karte mit bis zu 64 GByte Speicherkapazität.Das Display ist 3 Zoll groß und dient nicht nur zur Bildkontrolle und als Sucherersatz. Der Benutzer kann dank Touchscreen die Kamera darüber auch bedienen sowie auf Bildbereiche tippen, um scharfzustellen und auszulösen.Das WLAN-Modul der WB250F ermöglicht die direkte Funkübertragung der Aufnahmen auf ein Smartphone oder Tablet, ohne dass dazwischen ein WLAN-Router stehen muss. Wer will, kann auch Bilder per E-Mail verschicken oder in Cloud-Speicher-Diensten wie Dropbox ablegen. Dafür muss das mobile Gerät allerdings eine Internetverbindung aufbauen. Unterwegs dürfte das meist UMTS oder LTE sein, was am Inklusivvolumen kratzt oder mit zusätzlichen Kosten verbunden ist.

Eine Gruppe junger Wissenschaftler aus Texas hat auf der Crowdfunding-Plattform Kickstarter ein Projekt für eine 3D-Kamera vorgestellt. Mit dem Gerät, das äußerlich einem Tablet ähnelt, lassen sich Personen, Räume und auch Bewegungen scannen. Sie sieht zwar aus wie ein ziemlich großes Tablet, tatsächlich ist die Lynx A aber eine 3D-Kamera. Und eine besondere dazu: Sie nimmt nicht einfach Bilder auf, sondern erstellt 3D-Modelle von Räumen oder Menschen. Das Gerät ist relativ groß und macht einen etwas unhandlichen Eindruck: Lynx A ist 29,2 x 20,3 cm groß, 2,5 cm dick und wiegt 2,7 kg.Sie ist mit einer Kamera mit einer Auflösung von 640 x 480 Pixeln und einem 3D-Sensor ausgestattet. Die Bilder werden von einem 2,6-GHz-Core-i5-Prozessor von Intel sowie einem "leistungsfähigen" Grafikprozessor verarbeitet, zu dem aber keine Spezifikationen genannt werden. Zum Speichern stehen 500 GByte zur Verfügung.Bedient wird das Gerät über vier Knöpfe rechts am Bildschirm und je einen Joystick auf jeder Seite. Für die Aufnahme hält der Nutzer das Gerät hochkant und richtet die 3D-Kamera auf sein Motiv. Der 14 Zoll (35,5 Zentimeter) große Bildschirm dient dabei zum einen als Sucher, zum anderen zeigt er die 3D-Bilder an. Bis zu vier Stunden soll die Lynx A aufzeichnen können, bevor der Akku erschöpft ist.

Das Gerät ist für drei verschiedene Anwendungen gedacht: Mit der Kamera wird ein 3D-Modell eines Objekts oder einer Person erstellt. Dazu geht der Fotograf mit der Lynx A um die Person oder den Gegenstand herum. Das aufzunehmende Objekt wird so gescannt und das 3D-Bild kann beispielsweise direkt auf einen 3D-Drucker exportiert werden.Statt einer Person oder eines Objekts kann der Nutzer mit der Lynx A auch einen Raum abbilden, etwa für eine Architekturanwendung. Dazu schwenkt der Nutzer das Gerät über die Szenerie. Aufgenommen wird im Bereich zwischen 0,7 und 3,5 Metern.Die Lynx A kann zudem Videos aufzeichnen und für Motioncapturing eingesetzt werden. Dadurch lassen sich Bewegungen aufnehmen, die später etwa in einem Film oder einem Computerspiel verwendet werden können.Entwickelt wurde Lynx A an der Universität von Austin im US-Bundesstaat Texas. Um ihre Kamera zu vermarkten, haben die Wissenschaftler das Unternehmen Lynx Laboratories gegründet. Über ein Projekt auf der Crowdfunding-Plattform Kickstarter wollen sie 50.000 US-Dollar sammeln, um die Kamera in Kleinserien zu produzieren.

Nach drei Tagen haben 80 Spender schon über 36.000 US-Dollar zugesagt. Die Aktion läuft noch bis zum 18. März. Eine Lynx A gibt es ab 1.800 US-Dollar, für Käufer aus dem Ausland kommen noch 50 US-Dollar Versandkosten hinzu. Als Auslieferungstermin gibt Lynx Laboratories Juni 2013 an. Allerdings schaffen es nur die wenigsten Projektinitiatoren, den angegebenen Liefertermin einzuhalten.In den USA verkauft HP ab sofort sein erstes Notebook mit Chrome OS. Das Gerät besitzt als erstes Chromebook ein Display mit 14-Zoll-Diagonale und viele Schnittstellen, ist aber überraschend teuer. Für 330 US-Dollar steht HPs erstes Chromebook nun im Online Store des Unternehmens, nachdem seine technischen Daten bereits in der vergangenen Woche bekanntwurden. Das Gerät ist bisher nur in den USA verfügbar, ob und wann es in Deutschland auf den Markt kommt, hat Hewlett-Packard noch nicht bekanntgegeben. Der gegenüber anderen Chromebooks mit Intel-CPUs, wie Acers C7, gut 100 US-Dollar höhere Preis ist beim Pavilion 14 nur aufgrund des größeren Displays und der besseren Schnittstellenausstattung gerechtfertigt. So sind drei USB-2.0-Ports, Fast-Ethernet und HDMI als Anschlüsse vorhanden. Der Bildschirm zeigt trotz seiner Größe aber nur 1.366 x 768 Pixel.

Etwas flexibler als andere Geräte der Klasse ist das erste Chromebook von HP aber auch: So lässt sich der vorinstallierte Hauptspeicher von 2 GByte auf 4 GByte DDR3-RAM erweitern, dafür gibt es zwei SO-DIMM-Steckplätze. Der Akku ist zudem wechselbar, hält aber nach den Angaben von HP nur 4 Stunden und 15 Minuten durch.Dafür dürfte vor allem der ältere 32-Nanometer-Prozessor verantwortlich sein. Intel gibt für den im Pavilion verbauten Celeron 847 eine TDP von 17 Watt an. Die CPU besitzt zwei Kerne, die mit 1,1 GHz arbeiten und steuert auch die Grafik bei. Den gleichen Prozessor verwendet Acer auch in seinem Chromebook C7. Wie dieses ist auch das Pavilion nur mit 16 GByte Flash-Speicher versehen, laut HP besteht er aus einer SATA-SSD, so dass sich das Laufwerk wohl auch austauschen lässt. Ohne diese Maßnahme ist der Speicher durch einen SD-Steckplatz erweiterbar, wenn man nicht ganz auf Googles Cloud-Dienste setzen will.

Bei den drahtlosen Netzen bietet das neue Chromebook guten Standard, so ist WLAN nach 802.11 a/b/g/n vorhanden, und zwar mit zwei Antennen. So lassen sich auch Verbindungen mit maximal 300 MBit/s herstellen. Bluetooth beherrscht das 1,8 Kilogramm schwere Gerät in Version 2.2.Einer Mitteilung von HP zufolge wird das Pavilion 14 ab sofort nach Onlinebestellung ausgeliefert, zum Preis von 330 US-Dollar kommen aber noch die ortsüblichen Steuern sowie Versandkosten hinzu. Sollte HP das Chromebook zu einem ähnlichen Preis auch in Deutschland anbieten, so dürfte er inklusive Mehrwertsteuer kaum deutlich unter 400 Euro liegen - und damit konkurriert das Gerät dann schon mit deutlich besser ausgestatteten Windows-Notebooks.

Samsung präsentiert mit dem E2200 ein einfaches kleines Handy mit Bluetooth und langer Akkulaufzeit. Für Facebook und Twitter gibt es integrierte Anwendungen, außerdem ist Samsungs Ortungssoftware Utrack installiert. Das E2200 von Samsung hat einen 1,77 Zoll großen Bildschirm mit einer Auflösung von 160 x 128 Pixeln, der bis zu 65.536 Farben anzeigt. Unterhalb des Displays befinden sich ein Vier-Wege-Button und zwei Auswahlknöpfe, mit denen innerhalb des Samsung-eigenen Betriebssystems navigiert wird. Die Tastatur des Handys unterstützt die Texteingabe per T9. Für Fotos und Videos hat das E2200 eine eingebaute Kamera für Schnappschüsse mit einer Auflösung von 640 x 480 Pixeln, Videos können im Format 352 x 288 Pixel gemacht werden. Im 9 MByte großen internen Speicher können maximal 1.000 Nachrichten, 1.500 Kontakte und 100 Kalendereinträge gespeichert werden. Ein Steckplatz für Micro-SD-Karten bis maximal 16 GByte ist vorhanden.

Die Taktrate des Prozessors gibt Samsung mit 208 MHz an. Das E2200 unterstützt Dual-Band-GSM, die Frequenzen werden nicht genannt. Da das Handy für Deutschland angekündigt wird, ist anzunehmen, dass es die in Deutschland verwendeten Frequenzen 900 und 1.800 MHz sind. Bluetooth wird in der Version 2.1 unterstützt, WLAN gibt es nicht.Neben Anwendungen für Facebook und Twitter sind ein Internetbrowser, ein Kalender, ein Taschenrechner mit Umrechnungsfunktion, ein Wecker und eine Memo-Applikation vorinstalliert. Über Samsung Apps sind zudem weitere Hilfsprogramme und Spiele verfügbar. Die Apps können über eine Schnellzugriffsleiste aufgerufen werden.Über den Samsung-Dienst Utrack wird der Nutzer im Falle eines Diebstahls außerdem per SMS benachrichtigt, wenn der Dieb eine neue SIM-Karte in das Handy einlegt. An eine vorher definierte Nummer werden dann die Telefonnummer der neuen SIM-Karte und die IMEI-Nummer des gestohlenen Telefons übermittelt.

Laut Vea kann die Buddy-Uhr mit Android-, iOS- und Windows-Phone-Geräten genutzt werden. Mit der Smartwatch können unter anderem Anrufe entgegengenommen, abgelehnt oder gestartet werden.Die Smartwatch weist optisch und mit ihrem Vibrationsmotor auf eingehende Anrufe, Textnachrichten, MMS, E-Mails und Kalendereinträge hin. Die Zeitdarstellung der Buddy wird mit dem Mobilgerät synchronisiert.Außerdem zeigt Buddy eingegangene Nachrichten auf Wunsch gleich auf ihrem Display an und erspart es, zum Lesen das Smartphone zücken zu müssen. Das Gleiche ist mit Fotos aus der Galerie des Smartphones möglich. Angezeigt werden auch Benachrichtigungen aus den sozialen Netzwerken Facebook und Twitter.Auch andere Smartphone- oder Tablet-Anwendungen sollen das Display der Buddy-Uhr nutzen können. Als Beispiel nennt Vea auch Navigationssoftware, die etwa Fahrradfahrern mit Pfeilen und Entfernungsangaben zeigen könnte, wie sie zum Ziel kommen. Eine Steuerung der Musikwiedergabe ist ebenfalls möglich.

In dem 8 mm hohen Gehäuse, das durch einen Metallrahmen eingefasst ist, arbeitet ein Chip vom Hersteller MTK. Der interne Flashspeicher der Uhr ist 8 GByte groß. Über eine USB-Schnittstelle am einen Ende des Elastomer-Armbands können Softwareupdates eingespielt werden.Der Akku soll im regulären Betrieb 10 Tage durchhalten, bei Nichtbenutzung im Standby-Modus 14 Tage - so der Hersteller. Aufgeladen wird der Akku über die USB-Schnittstelle.Die Smartwatch wird als schockresistent und wasserdicht bis 3 ATM beschrieben. Für Sport ist sie damit geeignet, zum Schwimmen und Tauchen jedoch nicht.Vorbestellungen für die Vea Buddy sammelt der Hersteller über die Crowdfunding-Plattform Indiegogo. An der Hardware und Software sei bereits hart gearbeitet worden. Ziel sei es nun, mit Hilfe der in Vorleistung gehenden Unterstützer die Massenproduktion starten zu können. Design- und Produktionserfahrung hat Vea bereits mit anderen Produkten gesammelt, darunter auch andere Smartwatches und Uhrentelefone.

Samsung macht keine Angaben dazu, wann und zu welchem Preis die beiden neuen Galaxy-Smartphones auf den Markt kommen werden. Die Ausstattung lässt darauf schließen, dass es Geräte im unteren Preissegment sind.Während unseres Tests ist es uns mehrfach passiert, dass das eigentlich voll geladene Tablet samt dem Tastaturakku am nächsten Morgen leer war, obwohl es nicht benutzt wurde. Das erschwerte nicht nur erheblich unsere Akkutests, sondern nervte regelrecht. Die Erklärung dafür ist einfach, auch wenn wir nicht sofort auf die Idee kamen. Durch das Einlegen in den Rucksack wurde Druck auf den Ein- und Ausschalter ausgeübt und dieser Schalter funktioniert auch im geschlossenen Tablet-Zustand. Das ist an sich keine schlechte Idee. Viele professionelle Notebooks haben die Möglichkeit, das Gerät im geschlossenen Zustand anzuschalten, um es etwa an einem Monitor samt Tastatur zu betreiben, ohne das Notebook Staub auszusetzen. Der Schalter ist dann allerdings normalerweise sehr schwergängig und kann nicht versehentlich ausgelöst werden.

Dells Schalter ist allerdings sehr leichtgängig und wird in einer Tasche praktisch ständig gedrückt. Nach jedem Transport haben wir einen deutlichen Rückgang der Akkulaufzeit gemessen. Da wir bei einem Tablet mit sehr langen Laufzeiten rechnen, sorgen wir dafür, dass das Gerät sich nicht so schnell abschaltet. Normalerweise hat das keine großen Nachteile. Bei Dells Tablet hingegen ist das eine schlechte Idee. Ein Stoß genügt und das Tablet bleibt in der Tasche - in unserem Fall für eine halbe Stunde - aktiv, und zwar inklusive Displaybeleuchtung im zusammengeklappten Zustand.Wir haben die Gegenprobe mit dem ähnlich konstruierten und von uns getesteten Vivo Tab RT gemacht. Dieses schaltet sich nicht ein, da Asus den geschlossenen Zustand des Tablets höher einstuft als Aktivitäten am An- und Ausschalter.Eine Überhitzung ist beim XPS 10 nicht zu befürchten. Zwar wärmt sich das Tablet durchaus auf, als passiv gekühltes Gerät wird es aber nicht heiß genug, um Schaden anzurichten. Für das Arbeiten unterwegs eignet sich das XPS 10 damit nur bedingt. Der Anwender sollte immer darauf achten, dass das Tablet nicht falsch herum in der Tasche steckt. Da das XPS 10 so schön klein ist, neigten wir dazu, es quer mit dem gut greifbaren Scharnier in den Rucksack zu schieben. Das führt aber dazu, dass das Tablet unter Garantie eingeschaltet wird, weil der Schalter dann auf den Boden drückt.

Das Tablet lädt beide Akkus sehr schnell auf. Rund 3 Stunden brauchte es bei uns, um den Akku im Gerät und den im Dock aufzuladen. In Anbetracht der hohen Laufzeit ist das ein erfreuliches Ergebnis. Das Netzteil liefert 30 Watt, was für ein Tablet-Ladegerät ein sehr hoher Wert ist. Erfreulicherweise ist der Anwender nicht auf das Netzteil angewiesen. Wer will, kann über den Micro-USB-Anschluss immerhin das Tablet, nicht aber das Dock aufladen. Mit nur 2,5 Watt im USB-Standard dauert das natürlich deutlich länger. Wir haben aber keine volle Ladung damit gemessen. Die Akkulaufzeiten in der Praxis waren wegen der erwähnten Schalterprobleme enttäuschend. Nur allzu häufig waren wir froh, das Netzteil mitgenommen zu haben. In einem Fall war das eigentlich volle Tablet samt Tastaturakku nach 24 Stunden leer, obwohl es kaum benutzt wurde.

Wer das Tablet nur zu Hause verwendet, hat das Problem nicht. Hier sind nur mit dem Tablet Laufzeiten von etwa 10 Stunden möglich. In einem Test erreichten wir bei gar keiner Last sogar fast 13 Stunden bei niedrigen Helligkeitswerten. Mit dem Dock sind es noch einmal etwa 10 Stunden. Eine Designentscheidung von Dell störte uns aber. Wer das Tablet im Tastaturdock betreibt, macht zuerst das Tablet alle. Erst anschließend wird der Sekundärakku entladen, während das Tablet bei 6 Prozent Ladung bleibt. Wir sind davon überzeugt, dass das der falsche Weg ist, da wir gerne das Tablet aus dem Dock nehmen, um dann auf der Couch gemütlich zu surfen. Beim XPS 10 schaltet sich das Tablet aber nach der Entnahme schnell ab. Sollte das Tablet dann unter 2 Prozent fallen, kann es trotz eines 20-Prozent-Akkus im Tastaturdock nicht mehr gestartet werden. Asus geht hier einen besseren Mittelweg und belastet im normalen Betrieb beide Akkus.

Auf der technischen Seite hat uns Qualcomms Snapdragon besser gefallen als Nvidias Tegra 3. Bei der Datenübertagung per USB haben wir mit rund 20 bis 22 MByte/s leicht bessere Werte als beim Tegra 3 (17-19 MByte/s) ermittelt. Das gilt auch für den Micro-SD-Karten-Schacht. Das bleibt dennoch weit hinter dem, was eigentlich per USB 2.0 möglich ist.In der Praxis stellte sich heraus, dass der Snapdragon S4 im Desktop und auf der Kacheloberfläche wesentlich besser ist als der Tegra-Chip mit doppelt so vielen Kernen. Besonders deutlich sahen wir das beim Wechsel von einer Metro-App auf den Startbildschirm. Windows RT hat hier erhebliche Probleme, eine App schnell genug schlafen zu legen, was sich beim Tegra 3 durch starkes Ruckeln durch den Startbildschirm äußert. Der Snapdragon S4 hingegen scrollt in dieser Situation sauber durch den Bildschirm. Hier zeigt sich deutlich, dass es manchmal besser ist, zwei schnelle Kerne anstatt vier langsamere Kerne zu haben.

In Spielen gewinnt hingegen Nvidias Chip. Wenngleich das bei Spielen wie Jetpack Joyride und Riptide GT kaum bemerkbar ist. Vendetta Online ist hingegen für beide Chips eine Herausforderung. Und obwohl Vendetta Online Snapdragon-Werbung hat, ist das Spiel mit dem Tegra deutlich ruckelfreier. Allerdings kann auch gesagt werden, dass es derzeit kein Windows-RT-Gerät gibt, das Vendetta Online flüssig darstellen kann.In Browserbenchmarks wie etwa dem Sunspider ist wiederum Qualcomms Chip minimal schneller. Wir kommen hier auf Werte um die 950 ms. Nvidias Chip braucht etwa 50 ms mehr für einen Durchgang. Beim Durchlaufen des Benchmarks lässt sich der Internet Explorer übrigens beim Tegra-3-basierten Tablet kaum noch bewegen. Qualcomms Prozessor hat da noch Reserven, aber auch hier ruckelt es deutlich.

Im Octane-Benchmark sind die Verhältnisse ähnlich mit 707 (S4) zu 705 Punkten (Tegra 3). Große Unterschiede bei den Einzeltests gibt es nur beim Crypto-Test. Da ist der Snapdragon S4 40 Prozent schneller. Sonst ist der Tegra 3 meist ein bisschen schneller als Qualcomms SoC. Übrigens nutzen die schönen vielen Kerne bei beiden Benchmarks nichts. Hier ist einzig die Geschwindigkeit eines Kerns wichtig. Die anderen Kerne sind nur fürs Multitasking praktisch.Einschränkungen hat der Snapdragon-Prozessor anscheinend beim Abspielen von Videos. Der freie Film Sintel im 2K-Format (Surround, x264 im MP4-Container) ließ sich auf dem XPS 10 nicht starten. Als Fehlermeldung kam der Error Code 0xc00d11cd (0x80004004) und verwies auf die Xbox-Hilfe-Seiten, die dem Anwender aber keine Hilfestellung zu dem Problem geben. Das Tegra-3-Gerät spielte den Film ohne Probleme ab. Kleinere Videoformate funktionierten ohne Probleme.Dells XPS 10 ist bereits verfügbar und kostet einzeln mit 32 GByte Flashspeicher rund 480 Euro. Für 100 Euro mehr gibt es 64 GByte Speicherkapazität. Das Tastaturdock kostet 170 Euro extra. Noch nicht bekannt ist der Aufpreis für die UMTS-Variante. Die soll in den nächsten Wochen erscheinen, wie uns Dell auf Nachfrage erklärte.

Dells XPS 10 ist ein äußerlich schickes und robust wirkendes Windows-RT-Tablet. Im Vergleich zum ähnlich aufgebauten Vivo Tab RT von Asus gefällt uns das bessere Scharnier und das stabilere System, das zudem mit einer rutschfesten Oberfläche aufwarten kann. Außerdem hat Dell mehr Anschlüsse im Dock, dafür bietet Asus das eigene Tablet bereits mit 3G-Modem an. Dass der Anschalter bei Dells Tablet so leichtgängig ist, empfinden wir allerdings als groben Schnitzer und hoffen, dass Dell mit einem Firmwareupdate dieses Problem noch beseitigt. Asus und Apple zeigen, dass es besser geht. Da passiert bei geschlossenem Cover nichts. Apple hat zudem den Schalter an einer angeschrägten Seite, was ein versehentliches Drücken zusätzlich erschwert. Damit disqualifizierte sich das Tablet bei uns im Praxiseinsatz unterwegs. Wer Windows RT mit Tastaturdock haben will, greift dann lieber zum Asus-Modell.

Als reines Heimtablet ist das XPS 10 hingegen gut benutzbar. Zudem bleiben Windows-RT-typische Ruckler nach App-Wechseln mit Snapdragons S4 aus und die USB-Schnittstelle arbeitet schneller. Nur bei Spielen merken wir deutliche Vorteile eines Tegra 3.Logitech bringt mit dem Ultrathin Keyboard Mini eine kleine, für das iPad Mini passende Variante seiner dünnen iPad-Tastatur auf den Markt. Wie beim Original handelt es sich auch beim Ultrathin Keyboard Mini um eine Tastaturhülle, nur eben in kleinerem Format passend zum iPad Mini. Die Tastaturhülle wird magnetisch am iPad Mini befestigt und verbindet sich per Bluetooth mit Apples kleinem Tablet. Der integrierte Akku soll bei zwei Stunden Nutzung pro Tag rund drei Monate mit einer Ladung durchhalten. Trotz des kleinen Formats der Tastatur verspricht Logitech Tasten in Standardgröße und ein normales Tastenlayout. Eine Reihe mit Funktionstasten fehlt, aber einige Sonderfunktionen, Play und Stop, sind in die Zifferntasten integriert.

Anyone familiar with Microsoft’s other Surface tablets will instantly recognise the Surface 3. It looks just like the Surface RT and Surface 2 before it, with a grey metal body, three-position kickstand and a capacitive Windows button.The Surface 3 is also 2mm thinner and 54g lighter than its predecessor, at 8.7mm thick and 622g in weight. Compared to most tablets it is both thick and heavy – the iPad Air 2 is 6.1mm thick and weighs 437g – but it is slim and light for a full PC. The first – which came not from Snowden but from Kaspersky, a computer security firm – showed that for at least 14 years a unit in the NSA had succeeded in infecting the firmware that controls hard disk drives with malicious software that is able to persist even through reformatting of the disks.Firmware is computer code embedded in a read-only silicon chip. It’s what transforms a disk from a paperweight into a storage device. The hack is significant: the Kaspersky researchers who uncovered this said its ability to subvert hard-drive firmware "surpasses anything else” they had ever seen. Being able to compromise firmware gives an attacker total control of the system in a way that is stealthy and lasting, even through software updates. Which means that the unsuspecting victim can never get rid of it. If you think this has nothing to do with you, the compromised drives were manufactured by most of the leading companies in the disk-drive business, including Western Digital, Seagate, Toshiba, IBM, Micron and Samsung. Check your laptop specifications to see which one of these companies made the drive.The second revelation, last month, came from a GCHQ presentation provided by Snowden and reported in online publication the Intercept. Documents showed that a joint NSA/GCHQ team had hacked into the internal computer network of Gemalto, the world’s largest manufacturer of sim cards, stealing, in the process, encryption keys used to protect the privacy of mobile communications internationally.

Gemalto makes the chips used in mobile phones and credit cards and numbers among its customers AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Sprint and 450 other mobile network providers. It currently produces 2bn sim cards a year.If the attempted breach were successful, it would give security agencies the potential to monitor covertly the mobile phone communications of a large portion of the world’s population. Gemalto has conducted an investigation which concludes that there are "reasonable grounds to believe that an operation by NSA and GCHQ probably happened”, but that the attack "only breached... office networks and could not have resulted in a massive theft of sim encryption keys”. And even if the intruders had stolen encryption keys, the company claims that "the intelligence services would only be able to spy on communications on second generation 2G mobile networks. 3G and 4G networks are not vulnerable to this type of attack.”Oh yeah? The implication of these latest revelations is stark: the capabilities and ambitions of the intelligence services mean that no electronic communications device can now be regarded as trustworthy. It’s not only your mobile phone that might betray you: your hard disk could harbour a snake in the grass, too.No wonder Andy Grove, the former boss of Intel, used to say that "only the paranoid survive” in the technology business.

Anyone familiar with Microsoft’s other Surface tablets will instantly recognise the Surface 3. It looks just like the Surface RT and Surface 2 before it, with a grey metal body, three-position kickstand and a capacitive Windows button.The Surface 3 is also 2mm thinner and 54g lighter than its predecessor, at 8.7mm thick and 622g in weight. Compared to most tablets it is both thick and heavy – the iPad Air 2 is 6.1mm thick and weighs 437g – but it is slim and light for a full PC. The Surface Pro 3, for instance is 9.1mm thick and weighs 800g, while even Apple’s thinnest and lightest MacBook is 13.1mm thick and 920g.The Surface 3 has a smaller screen than the Surface Pro 3, but has the same 3:2 ratio as its bigger brother. Most Windows laptops and tablets use the wider 16:9 or 16:10 ratio, which is better for video consumption but worse for browsing sites and reading text.The 10.8in full HD screen has wide viewing angles and is relatively crisp for a PC, but isn’t in the same league as many tablets or high-end computer screens that have twice the resolution and higher pixel densities such as the iPad Air 2, Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S, Apple’s MacBook, Dell’s XPS 13 or the Surface Pro 3.
Microsoft hasn’t fixed the fundamental problem with Windows and high resolution (HiDPI) displays yet – I’m told Windows 10 will do that – which means how applications look on the screen is a bit hit and miss.Windows apps downloaded from the Microsoft store look crisp as do some standard applications such as Google’s Chrome. But many do not take advantage of high resolution icons and text. As a result programs such as Evernote look awful with blurry icons, menu buttons and text.The Surface 3 comes with a copy of Microsoft Office 365 personal, which is a nice added extra and works very well on the tablet.

The Surface 3 is powered by Intel’s Atom X7 1.6GHz quad-core processor, which is the chip maker’s latest low-power processor for mobile devices. It is a very different animal to the poorly performing Atom chips used in netbooks circa 2007.General computing performance is solid. The Surface 3 feels snappy and handled most things without issue. Light Photoshop duty was fine, as were standard office duties. It can also support a second screen through the mini DisplayPort – connecting a standard 22in monitor worked well enough, but made the Surface 3 a bit sluggish, as did opening over 15 tabs in Chrome.The Surface 3 is completely fanless, however, which is impressive given the performance. It is silent and even when installing apps while attempting to write this review it barely got warm.Also notable is the inclusion of a full size USB 3.0 port, which makes connecting accessories, mice or just about anything very easy – a big bonus for a full PC. A docking station is promised for later in the year, which will add further ports and utility as a desktop computer replacement.
Microsoft’s proprietary magnetic charging connector has been replaced in the Surface 3 with a microUSB port. The tablet ships with a high-powered microUSB charger, but it can be charged with any USB charger.It charges quite slowly with the charger in the box when in use – adding only 5% in about an hour. It will charge even slower with a less powerful USB adapter. A full charge takes three to four hours when in standby.The battery lasts for around seven hours of general computing in my testing, which is far from the 11-plus hours of battery offered by ARM-based tablets but is good enough for a day’s work.

The Surface 3 does not ship with a keyboard – it is a £110 extra. I would call it optional, but it’s not really. Without the keyboard the Surface 3 is a mediocre tablet. With the keyboard it’s an excellent hybrid.The keyboard acts as a cover for the screen, magnetically attaching to the side of the Surface 3. It has full-sized backlit keys that, while slim, have a decent amount of travel. It is very clicky though, and is noticeably louder than most other laptop keyboards.The trackpad is solid, if a bit small, but supports two-finger scrolling and other standard gestures.The Surface 3 also has an optional pressure-sensitive stylus costing £45. It is accurate, feels like a pen and rivals a dedicated Wacom tablet making drawing on the screen or hand writing a pleasure, but is very much optional.
The Surface 3 has an eight-megapixel camera on the back, which works well enough for a tablet, but isn’t worth writing home about. The front-facing 3.5-megapixel camera is solid for video calling.
The Microsoft Surface 3 costs £419 with 64GB of storage and 2GB of RAM, or £499 with 128GB of storage and 4GB of RAM, available on 7 May.

The Surface 3 is Microsoft’s best compromise between price, size and power yet. As a tablet it performs admirably – not as good as dedicated tablets with longer batteries, crisper screens and slimmer profiles, but good enough.The situation is similar when it comes to using the Surface 3 as a laptop replacement. It’s not as easy to use on a lap, and isn’t as powerful as similarly priced laptops, but it does the job well enough.The biggest issue is that at £419 without the £110 detachable keyboard it’s really not all that cheap. The Surface Pro 3 with a better screen, faster processor and similar battery life comes with a keyboard for £639.Despite that the Surface 3 is the best jack of all trades yet and is arguably a better work machine than an iPad with a keyboard case.ack in July 2013, a few weeks after Edward Snowden’s revelations about internet and mobile-phone surveillance began, I wrote a column that began: "Repeat after me: Edward Snowden is not the story. The story is what he has revealed about the hidden wiring of our networked world.”

The spur for the column was my realisation of the extent and astuteness of Snowden’s choice of what to collect and reveal. His was not some opportunistic smash-and-grab data heist, but a considered, informed selection of cases where he thought that the National Security Agency was violating the US constitution and/or circumventing its laws. Snowden was clearly no stereotypical left-wing dissident; he seemed closer to what US constitutional lawyers called an "originalist” – someone who regards the constitution as a sacred, inviolable document that citizens – and their governments – must continue to respect and adhere to. If Snowden were in the US today, I suspect he would be a supporter of Rand Paul.What Snowden did was careful and considered: he identified examples of what he regarded were unconstitutional activities on the part of the NSA and then downloaded documentary evidence of these activities that would corroborate his judgment. Given the staggering scale of the activities revealed, I remember thinking that it would take us a long time to realise the full extent of the surveillance mesh in which we are entangled. So it has proved.

But a few recent revelations suggest that we may now be getting down to bedrock. Two concern the consummate hacking capabilities of the NSA and its overseas franchises. The first – which came not from Snowden but from Kaspersky, a computer security firm – showed that for at least 14 years a unit in the NSA had succeeded in infecting the firmware that controls hard disk drives with malicious software that is able to persist even through reformatting of the disks.Firmware is computer code embedded in a read-only silicon chip. It’s what transforms a disk from a paperweight into a storage device. The hack is significant: the Kaspersky researchers who uncovered this said its ability to subvert hard-drive firmware "surpasses anything else” they had ever seen. Being able to compromise firmware gives an attacker total control of the system in a way that is stealthy and lasting, even through software updates. Which means that the unsuspecting victim can never get rid of it. If you think this has nothing to do with you, the compromised drives were manufactured by most of the leading companies in the disk-drive business, including Western Digital, Seagate, Toshiba, IBM, Micron and Samsung. Check your laptop specifications to see which one of these companies made the drive.The second revelation, last month, came from a GCHQ presentation provided by Snowden and reported in online publication the Intercept. Documents showed that a joint NSA/GCHQ team had hacked into the internal computer network of Gemalto, the world’s largest manufacturer of sim cards, stealing, in the process, encryption keys used to protect the privacy of mobile communications internationally.

Gemalto makes the chips used in mobile phones and credit cards and numbers among its customers AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Sprint and 450 other mobile network providers. It currently produces 2bn sim cards a year.If the attempted breach were successful, it would give security agencies the potential to monitor covertly the mobile phone communications of a large portion of the world’s population. Gemalto has conducted an investigation which concludes that there are "reasonable grounds to believe that an operation by NSA and GCHQ probably happened”, but that the attack "only breached... office networks and could not have resulted in a massive theft of sim encryption keys”. And even if the intruders had stolen encryption keys, the company claims that "the intelligence services would only be able to spy on communications on second generation 2G mobile networks. 3G and 4G networks are not vulnerable to this type of attack.”Oh yeah? Wie beim Motorola Razr I sollten auf dem Grand X In alle mit dem SDK für die Dalvik VM programmierten Apps problemlos laufen. Mit dem Native Development Kit (NDK) erstellte Apps können jedoch aufgrund von Kompatibilitätsproblemen mit der x86-Prozessorarchitektur nicht laufen. Während unseres Tests mussten wir auf keine App verzichten.ZTE hat das Android-System kaum sichtbar verändert. Der Homescreen und die App-Übersicht sehen aus wie beim originalen Android 4.0, lediglich dem Benachrichtigungsmenü wurde eine zusätzliche Schnelleinstellungsleiste spendiert. Hier kann der Nutzer Funktionen wie WLAN, Bluetooth, GPS oder den Flugmodus direkt an- und ausschalten.Den Sperrbildschirm hat ZTE durch ein eigenes Design ersetzt. Dabei ist die Entsperrlogik entgegengesetzt zum üblichen Prozedere: Wischt der Nutzer einen Kreis weg, erscheint nicht wie gewohnt der Hauptbildschirm, sondern mehrere Schnellzugriffstasten für die Kamera, die Telefonfunktion und weitere Programme und Funktionen. Um zum Hauptbildschirm zu kommen, muss das Kreissymbol länger gedrückt werden. ZTE scheint sich der Gefahr, Nutzer damit zu verwirren, bewusst zu sein; um den Kreis herum steht deutlich Zum Entsperren lang drücken.

Der Hersteller hat einige Apps vorinstalliert, unter anderem einen Akkumanager, ein Systemupdate-Programm, einen Task-Manager und einen Dateimanager. Eine App, mit der Office-Dokumente auf dem Smartphone betrachtet werden können, ist ebenfalls installiert. Mit einer zusätzlichen Backup-App können Nutzer Daten wie Kontakte, SMS und die Systemeinstellungen sowie die installierten Apps sichern.Die Tastatur ist eine Touchpal genannte Eigenentwicklung von ZTE. Die gewohnte Android-Tastatur kann weiterhin in den Einstellungen ausgewählt werden.Die Touchpal-Tastatur kann wie eine normale Tastatur verwendet werden, ermöglicht aber auch Swype-Eingaben. Diese Funktion nennt ZTE Touchpal Curve. Der Curve-Modus funktioniert gut, die meisten Wörter werden problemlos erkannt. Jedoch fällt bei der Texterkennung generell auf, dass einige einfache Begriffe wie Personalpronomen nicht im deutschen Wörterbuch vorhanden sind. Diese muss der Nutzer selbst abspeichern.

Per integrierter Schaltfläche kann von Deutsch auf eine andere Sprache umgestellt werden, über einen anderen Schalter lässt sich die automatische Texterkennung komplett abschalten. Deutsche Umlaute können nicht direkt eingetippt werden, sie sind über einen langen Tastendruck auf die jeweiligen Vokale erreichbar. Dafür hat die Tastatur eine separate ß-Taste.Wird das Grand X In nach längerer Zeit aus dem Standby aufgeweckt, während es in ein WLAN-Netzwerk eingewählt ist, reagiert der Touchscreen manchmal nicht mehr auf Eingaben. Das Display braucht dann bis zu einer Minute, um wieder zu reagieren. Der Bug tritt jedoch nur bei bestimmten WLAN-Netzwerken auf: So konnten wir ihn nur in unserem Redaktionsnetzwerk beobachten, bei anderen WLAN-Netzen arbeitete das Smartphone normal.Der Fehler wird allerdings auch in einigen Internetforen diskutiert, beispielsweise bei Android-Hilfe.de. Dort wird berichtet, dass das Problem nicht mehr auftaucht, wenn das WLAN-Modul deaktiviert ist. Dies können wir bei unserem Testgerät bestätigen. Abschließend können wir die Ursache nicht eindeutig klären. Es ist das erste Mal, dass ein solches Problem bei uns mit einem Testsmartphone auftritt. ZTE erklärte auf Nachfrage von Golem.de, dass ein derartiges Verhalten des Grand X In bisher nicht bekannt gewesen sei.

Im Javascript-Benchmark Octane erreicht das Grand X In 1.743 Punkte. Damit liegt es nahe am Samsung Galaxy S3, das 1.862 schafft. Das Motorola Razr I mit Intels Atom Z2480 erreicht hier 2.097 Punkte, was an der höheren Prozessortaktung liegen dürfte.Das Ergebnis des Grafikbenchmarks liegt bei 13 fps, das Grand X In ist damit fast gleichauf mit dem Razr I mit 12 fps.Beim Hardwarebenchmark mit Geekbench erreicht das Grand X In 852 Punkte, das Razr I schafft hier 1.013 Punkte. Das Motorola-Smartphone ist dem Gerät von ZTE in jedem Testabschnitt leicht überlegen. Im Vergleich dazu erreicht das Galaxy S3 mit ARM-Prozessor einen deutlich höheren Wert, das Gerät liegt bei 1.777 Punkten.Dennoch reagiert das Grand X In zügig auf Eingaben und läuft flüssig in den Menüs. Wir konnten in den meisten Anwendungen keine nennenswerten Aussetzer feststellen, auch mit mehreren offenen Anwendungen kommt der Single-Core-Prozessor dank Hyperthreading gut zurecht. Auch mit grafikintensiven Spielen hat das Grand X In keine Probleme: Der First-Person-Shooter Nova 3 läuft sehr flüssig und ohne Aussetzer.

Internetseiten werden im Browser weitgehend ruckelfrei angezeigt. Die Seiten können ohne besonders auffällige Hakler gescrollt werden, andere Geräte mit Android 4.0 alias Ice Cream Sandwich zeigen hier stärkere Aussetzer. Ein Unterschied zu Smartphones und Tablets mit Android 4.1 alias Jelly Bean ist dennoch erkennbar.Mit dem Grand X In liefert ZTE ein Smartphone, das aufgrund des stromsparenden Prozessors, des guten Displays und der sauberen Verarbeitung nicht nur für Einsteiger interessant ist. Auch für fortgeschrittene Nutzer, die ihr Mobiltelefon nicht jeden Tag aufladen wollen oder können und trotzdem nicht auf die Funktionen eines Smartphones verzichten möchten, ist das Gerät reizvoll. Im alltäglichen Einsatz hält der Akku bei gleicher Anwendungsweise länger als bei anderen Smartphones durch. Bei Dauerbeanspruchung kann das SoC seine stromsparenden Eigenschaften zwar nicht zeigen, sie tritt im Alltag allerdings auch selten auf. Programme laufen mit dem einzelnen Kern flüssig, auch mit aufwendigeren Spielen und mehreren offenen Apps kann der Intel-Prozessor dank Hyperthreading gut umgehen.

Gut gefallen hat uns die allgemein schnelle Reaktion des Grand X In. Auch das Display macht dank der angenehmen Farben und der Schärfe einen sehr guten Eindruck.Für den niedrigen Preis des Grand X In musste ZTE an einigen Stellen Kompromisse eingehen. So konnte uns die Kamera nicht vollständig überzeugen, auch die Speicherausstattung ist alles andere als üppig. Trotz dieser Einschränkungen ist das Grand X In für unter 230 Euro aber ein tolles Gerät, das eine Kaufüberlegung wert ist.Andrea Biffi hat die Hülle eines Kameraakkus zu einem Netzteil umgebaut, um eine DSLR für lange Zeitraffer- oder Filmaufnahmen permanent mit Strom zu versorgen. Dazu sind allerdings ein wenig Bastelgeschick und Elektronikwissen erforderlich. Teuer ist der Umbau jedoch nicht. Der italienische Ingenieur und Fotograf Andrea Biffi hat aus einem defekten Akku seiner DSLR eine Permanentstromversorgung für eine Canon-Kamera gebaut. Ein kleines Kabel ragt aus dem Akkugehäuse heraus, das mit der Stromquelle verbunden wird. Damit lässt sich die Kamera kontinuierlich mit Strom versorgen. Als Ausgangsbasis diente ein defekter Akku. Canon bietet auch eine professionelle Lösung an, die aber rund 120 Euro kostet.

Neben etwas Werkzeug benötigen Bastler, die Biffis Experiment nachbauen wollen, einen kleinen, verstellbaren Step-down-Spannungsregler, der in das Akkugehäuse eingebaut wird. So etwas kostet wenige Euros und ist online in Auktionshäusern oder Elektronikläden erhältlich. Biffi verwendete den LM2596S DC-DC, der 52 x 20 x 11 mm misst.Der Spannungsregler muss klein sein, damit er in das Akkugehäuse passt, das zu diesem Zweck aufgebrochen und geleert werden muss. Im Falle von Biffis Canon 40D mussten zwei Lithium-Ionen-Zellen aus dem Gehäuse entfernt und ein Loch in die Seitenwand gebohrt werden, über das das Kabel nach außen geführt wird. Es wird zum Beispiel mit einem Steckernetzteil verbunden. Denkbar ist auch die Stromversorgung über eine größere Batterie. Auf diese Weise können lange Filmaufnahmen oder Zeitrafferfotos ohne Akkuwechsel gestartet werden. Der umgebaute Akku wird in die Kamera gesteckt. Das abgehende Kabel lässt sich vor dem Schließen des Akkudeckels seitlich aus der Kamera über die davor vorgesehene Aussparung herausführen.

Sony wollte das Xperia ZL eigentlich gar nicht in Deutschland anbieten. Nun wird das Handelsunternehmen Phone House das Android-Smartphone in Deutschland vermarkten. Es soll im April 2013 für 600 Euro zu haben sein. Sony hatte das Xperia ZL zusammen mit dem Xperia Z auf der Unterhaltungselektronikmesse CES in Las Vegas Anfang Januar 2013 vorgestellt, aber versichert, dass es nicht offiziell in Deutschland vermarktet wird. Nun bringt Phone House das Sony-Smartphone im April 2013 in Deutschland auf den Markt. Das Xperia ZL wird dann zum Preis von 600 Euro angeboten. Das Xperia ZL ähnelt dem Xperia Z. Das ZL-Modell hat keine IP55- und IP57-Zertifizierung, steckt also nicht in einem Gehäuse, das vor Staub und Wasser geschützt ist. Der Akku im Xperia ZL ist fest eingebaut, so dass er sich nicht ohne weiteres wechseln lässt. Auch bei der Gehäusegröße und dem Gewicht gibt es Unterschiede zwischen den beiden Modellen.

Ansonsten hat das Xperia ZL ein Reality-Display mit der Mobile Bravia Engine 2, ist 5 Zoll groß und hat eine Auflösung von 1.920 x 1.080 Pixeln. Das ergibt eine Pixeldichte von 441 ppi. Das Display des iPhone 5 hat im Vergleich dazu 326 ppi, das des Samsung Galaxy S3 knapp 306 ppi. Der Bildschirm wird durch kratzfestes Glas geschützt.Im Inneren des Xperia ZL arbeitet ein Snapdragon-S4-Quad-Core-Prozessor von Qualcomm mit 1,5 GHz, die GPU ist eine Adreno 320. Der Arbeitsspeicher ist 2 GByte groß, der Flash-Speicher 16 GByte. Davon sollen dem Nutzer rund 11 GByte zur Verfügung stehen, ein Steckplatz für Micro-SD-Karten bis 64 GByte ist vorhanden.Auf der Rückseite ist eine 13-Megapixel-Kamera mit Sonys Exmor-RS-Sensor eingebaut, die einen Autofokus und ein LED-Licht hat. Die Kamera verfügt über eine Schwenkpanorama-Funktion und nimmt Videos in 1080p auf. Auf der Vorderseite befindet sich eine 2-Megapixel-Kamera für Videotelefonie, die sich rechts unterhalb des Displays befindet und nicht wie vielfach üblich oberhalb des Displays.

Das Carbon 35 kann laut der Quelle als Dual-SIM-Gerät zwei SIM-Karten aufnehmen und wird mit Android 4.0 alias Ice Cream Sandwich ausgeliefert.Mit dem Titanium 52 will Archos den Einstieg in den Smartphone-Markt komplettieren. Dieses Modell wird ein 5,2 Zoll großes IPS-Display mit einer Auflösung von 800 x 480 Pixeln haben. Der Dual-Core-Prozessor hat laut Lecourt eine Taktrate von 1,2 GHz, die Größe des Arbeitsspeichers beträgt wie beim Carbon-35-Modell 512 MByte. Der Flash-Speicher ist mit 4 GByte allerdings größer, ein Steckplatz für Micro-SD-Karten soll auch hier eingebaut sein.Das Titanium 52 wird ebenfalls mit Android 4.0 alias Ice Cream Sandwich in den Handel kommen. Das Smartphone hat laut der Quelle eine 5-Megapixel-Kamera, der Akku hat eine Nennladung von 2.200 mAh.

Das Platinum 48 soll im Mai 2013 für 250 Euro in den Handel kommen. Bereits im April 2013 würden die beiden anderen Modelle erscheinen. Das Carbon 35 soll 90 Euro kosten, zum Titanium 52 wurde Lecourt kein Preis genannt.Das Grand X In von ZTE soll durch die stromsparende Standby-Funktion des eingebauten Intel-Chips eine längere Akkulaufzeit als andere Smartphones haben, außerdem soll es für wenig Geld eine anständige Ausstattung geben. Wir haben das Android-Gerät getestet. Das Grand X In ist eines von wenigen in Deutschland erhältlichen Android-Smartphones mit Intel-Prozessor. Das System-on-a-Chip (SoC) verspricht im Vergleich zu anderen Geräten mit ARM-Prozessoren eine längere Akkulaufzeit, da es im Standby-Modus den Stromverbrauch reduziert. Mit einem Preis von unter 230 Euro ist das Grand X In zudem günstig, die technischen Details sind bis auf einige preisbedingte Kompromisse ordentlich. Inwieweit sich die stromsparenden Eigenschaften des Intel-Prozessors im alltäglichen Gebrauch auswirken, haben wir überprüft. Außerdem untersuchen wir in unserem Test, ob die technische Ausstattung des Gerätes ausreicht, um das Smartphone auch für fortgeschrittene Android-Nutzer interessant zu machen.

Der Intel-Prozessor des Grand X In ist ein Atom Z2460 (Medfield) mit einer Taktung von 1,6 GHz. Das SoC hat nur einen Kern, arbeitet allerdings durch Intels Hyper-Threading-Technik bei Bedarf wie ein Dual-Core-Prozessor. Das soll die Leistung bei Anwendungen, die mehr als einen Kern verwenden, erhöhen.Das TFT-Display des ZTE Grand X In ist wie das des Motorola Razr I 4,3 Zoll groß und hat eine Auflösung von 960 x 540 Pixeln. Das ergibt eine Pixeldichte von 256 ppi. Das Grand X In hat 1 GByte Arbeitsspeicher. Der Flash-Speicher hat eine Größe von 4 GByte, wovon dem Nutzer lediglich 1,6 GByte zur Verfügung stehen. Zusätzlich gibt es knapp über 500 MByte Telefonspeicher. Ein Steckplatz für Micro-SD-Karten bis maximal 32 GByte ist vorhanden. Auf der Rückseite ist eine 8-Megapixel-Kamera mit Autofokus und LED-Fotolicht angebracht, die Frontkamera für Videotelefonie hat 0,3 Megapixel.

Das Smartphone unterstützt Quad-Band-GSM und UMTS auf den Frequenzen 900, 1.900 und 2.100 MHz mit HSDPA bis 21 MBit/s und HSUPA bis 5,76 MBit/s. WLAN funkt es nach 802.11b/g/n, also nur auf der Frequenz 2,4 GHz. Bluetooth wird in der Version 3.0 unterstützt, ein GPS-Modul ist eingebaut.Das Display des Grand X In gibt Bilder scharf wieder und ist blickwinkelstabil. Das Bild wirkt etwas schärfer und detaillierter als das des Razr I mit gleicher Pixeldichte. Das Razr I mit seinem Super-Amoled-Bildschirm zeigt zwar kräftigere, leuchtendere Farben, dafür werden Ränder und Kanten etwas ausgefranst abgebildet. Der Touchscreen des Grand X In reagiert weitgehend gut, mitunter werden jedoch Eingaben nicht sofort erkannt. Die nicht näher benannte Glasabdeckung des Displays ist empfindlich für Fingerabdrücke. Tapser und die für einen Touchscreen üblichen Schmierspuren lassen sich schwer wegwischen, selbst mit einem Mikrofasertuch. Unterhalb des Bildschirms sind vier Hardware-Touch-Tasten angebracht. Mit ihnen kann der Nutzer durch das Betriebssystem navigieren. Neben den üblichen Schaltflächen für Zurück, Home und Menü gibt es eine Taste, mit der die Google-Suche direkt aufgerufen werden kann.

Der Lagesensor reagiert ohne nennenswerte Verzögerung. Die automatische Helligkeitsregulierung funktioniert mit dem für Android typischen angenehmen Übergang, allerdings wird die Beleuchtung in dunklen Räumen manchmal zu wenig nach unten korrigiert. Dann ist das Display unangenehm grell. In manchen halbdunklen Lichtsituationen regelt der Sensor zudem die Helligkeit zu häufig, was zu störenden Schwankungen führt.Der Atom-Prozessor des Grand X In regelt die elektrische Leistungsaufnahme stufenweise auf ein Minimum herunter, wenn das Smartphone in den Standby-Modus versetzt wird. Dadurch erhöht sich die Laufzeit des 1.650-mAh-Akkus im Vergleich zu Geräten mit ARM-Prozessor deutlich. So hatten wir abends noch über 30 Prozent Akkuladung übrig, nachdem wir tagsüber bei voller Bildschirmhelligkeit und aktiviertem WLAN unter anderem E-Mails gelesen, Wartezeiten mit Spielen überbrückt und zwei Stunden Musik per Streaming gehört hatten sowie bei Twitter und Facebook aktiv gewesen waren.

Bei Dauernutzung des Smartphones kommen die stromsparenden Eigenschaften des Intel-Prozessors nicht mehr zum Tragen, da die Leistungsaufnahme dann nicht mehr minimiert wird. Dies macht sich sofort bei den Akkulaufzeiten bemerkbar. Der Akku hält bei Dauerbelastung des Prozessors und voller Helligkeit des Bildschirms 2,5 Stunden durch - ein durchschnittlicher Wert. Schlechter schneidet das Grand X In im Vergleich zu anderen Smartphones ab, wenn der Nutzer ein Video abspielt. Einen 720p-Film konnten wir nur knapp 3 Stunden lang gucken, bis der Akku leer war. Dieser Wert ist eher schlecht, ein HTC One X Plus hielt beispielsweise fast 7 Stunden mit einer Akkuladung durch.Um den Film auf dem Grand X In zu starten, mussten wir zudem den externen MX Player mit einem x86-Plugin verwenden. Das eingebaute Videoabspielprogramm konnte unser Testvideo wegen eines fehlenden Audiocodecs nicht abspielen. Einen 1080p-Film konnten wir auch nur mit dem MX Player starten, er ruckelte allerdings stark.Im alltäglichen Betrieb überzeugt der Intel-Chip mit einer deutlich längeren Akkulaufzeit, im Dauereinsatz wirken sich die stromsparenden Funktionen hingegen erwartungsgemäß nicht aus.

Das Grand X In ist gut verarbeitet, das Gehäuse knarzt wegen der abnehmbaren Rückseite aber etwas. Das Spaltmaß zwischen Vorder- und Rückseite ist gering, der Kunststoff fühlt sich nicht billig an. Die Rückseite ist mattiert und aufgeraut, weshalb das Gerät gut in der Hand liegt.Das Gehäuse misst 127,1 x 64,8 mm und ist 10 mm dick. Auf der Rückseite befindet sich in Höhe der Lautsprecheröffnungen ein kleiner Wulst, hier misst das Gerät 11,5 mm. Die Kameralinse ragt etwas aus dem Gehäuse heraus, auch hier beträgt die Dicke 11,5 mm. Das Smartphone wiegt 142 Gramm. Im Vergleich dazu ist das Motorola Razr I mit 122,3 x 60,7 mm etwas kleiner, die Dicke liegt aufgrund der leichten Keilform zwischen 8,6 und 10,3 mm. Mit 127 Gramm ist das Razr I zudem etwas leichter. Von vorne betrachtet erinnert das Design des Smartphones an das des Galaxy Nexus von Samsung, das mit 136 x 68 x 8,9 mm etwas größer und dünner ist.

An der Oberseite des Grand X In sind die Kopfhörerbuchse und der Einschalter angebracht, auf der linken Seite die Lautstärkewippe und der Micro-USB-Anschluss. Das Gerät hat keinen separaten HDMI-Ausgang, über einen MHL-Adapter kann der Nutzer jedoch einen externen Bildschirm anschließen. In den Einstellungen des Smartphones kann das Ausgabebild skaliert werden, zudem stehen mehrere Anzeigemodi zur Verfügung.Der Rückdeckel des Gehäuses lässt sich abnehmen, darunter befinden sich der Akku und die Einschübe für die Standard-SIM-Karte und die Micro-SD-Karte. Allerdings ist es etwas schwierig, den Deckel abzubekommen: Wie beim Huawei Ascend G615 befindet sich in einer Gehäuseecke eine Aussparung für einen Fingernagel, die man mit ziemlicher Kraft aufhebeln muss. Der Deckel lässt sich ohne Mühe wieder aufsetzen.Die auf der Rückseite angebrachte Kamera hat 8 Megapixel, Autofokus und ein LED-Fotolicht. Die aufgenommenen Fotos haben bei Kunstlicht einen leichten Blaustich, bei Tageslichtaufnahmen einen Rotstich. Bei den Kunstlichtaufnahmen zeigen die Bilder durchweg deutliche Artefakte, bei den Tageslichtaufnahmen sind diese hauptsächlich in schattigen oder dunkleren Bereichen sichtbar. Der Kontrast der Aufnahmen ist generell etwas niedrig, die Bilder sind etwas weniger scharf als beim Samsung Galaxy S3. Details werden dennoch gut dargestellt.

Für gelegentliche Schnappschüsse reicht die Kamera des Grand X In allemal aus. Angesichts des niedrigen Preises des Smartphones muss sie mit der Fotoqualität eines iPhones oder Galaxy S3 auch nicht mithalten können.Auf der Rückseite des Smartphones befinden sich unterhalb der Kamera und des Fotolichts zwei Lautsprecheröffnungen. Wird der Rückdeckel entfernt, stellt sich heraus, dass die rechte Öffnung lediglich eine Attrappe ist und das Grand X In nur einen einzelnen Lautsprecher hat. Dieser ist nicht besonders laut, hat dafür aber einen ausgewogenen Klang. Die Bässe sind nicht stark, passen aber zu den angenehm dezenten Höhen. Der Lautsprecher klingt besser, wenn das Smartphone umgedreht wird und der Nutzer die Rückseite vor sich hat. Wird das Gerät auf einen Tisch gelegt, erhöht sich die Lautstärke ein wenig und die Höhen treten etwas stärker hervor. Auch in dieser Position klingt der Lautsprecher noch gut. Wird das Grand X In in der Hand gehalten, ist der Klang hingegen etwas dumpf und blechern. Das Grand X In wird mit Android 4.0.4 alias Ice Cream Sandwich ausgeliefert. Für den Einsatz auf Intels SoC musste Android auf die x86-Architektur portiert werden. Auf Nachfrage von Golem.de erklärte ZTE, dass momentan noch nicht feststehe, ob es ein Update geben wird. Der Hersteller werde eine mögliche Aktualisierung von der Nachfrage nach dem Smartphone abhängig machen.
